Almost lost my boat! (Winch problems)

The ramp was not steep
The ballast was in, but the vent and valve were open to allow it to empty
I always use the motor to push the boat onto the trailer and do not need to crank the boat onto the trailer with the winch
The boat was up hard against the v block when i started to pull her out of the water
The ballast was empty when this pop happened as it I waited for it to drain before pulling the boat the rest of the way up the ramp
The winch that comes with the mac is too week to do the job
I will be getting a better one before I trailer anywhere else

Sounds good Beene...please post some pictures of your upgrade.

The winch that's on my trailer is old, and has a problem with the handle hitting the bow of the boat, as others have posted. One of the PO's "fixed" the problem by bending the handle away from the winch, etc. etc. So replacing it is likely for me as well down the road a few months.

Funny thing is I was pulling my heavier laden boat outa the water @ the exact same time as u @ same ramp with ballast full & had no issues @ all , Guess my Technique. is better than ur's

I replaced my winch with this,

but at a rating of 2000lbs, it was overwhelmed when cranking the boat onto the trailer with a full ballast that had the vent open (so the ballast would drain while pulling the trailer up the ramp). How it was overwhelmed was that the crank would not hold when I let it go. There is a locking pin that can not hold the weight, thus the handle will not lock when let go. The winch pulled the boat fine, but now I have to secure the handle with another rope when the boat is trailered, because I will not assume the locking mechanism will hold.

Now that I have razzed him good
I always tie off the bow eye with an extra line to the winch holding bar & tighten it up good as a secondary safety just incase that flimsie strap decides too let go or that cheap winch desides too fail & it stays on for trailering for the same reason

Beene, good luck with your new winch, you might need it.

The angle of the strap from the winch to the boat looks to be pulling mostly down instead of forward for the last few inches.

Looking at your picture it's hard to imagine how the boat will ever get fully seated to the vee block by winch power alone.

So be it, but maybe you can rewind the winch spool to have the strap come off the "top" of the roll instead of the bottom of the roll.
It might reverse the direction of the handle turning, but at least the strap angle won't be so downward pulling.

This idea works as well with a stock winch, which also pulls more down than forward.

Thats an easy mod u may be able to run the cable through the top if their a bolt there just add a roller sleeve onto the bolt I'll have a look @ it the next time I see u , also their is an easy mod for that if not someone posted they added a I beleive it was a u shaped brkt on top then added a bolt & roller sleeve through the bolt so it raised the cable up just so as it was pulling up all the way in I'll see if I can find the post for u cause I want too do that mod also

Here u go very easy mod I will most likely copy it if I have to as I/m thinking of install my electric winch that I took off my power boat trl before I sold it !

Turns out my new winch is reversible
So no worries there

Was thinking ideally one would want the pulling force to be even higher than the v block

Not sure how anyone can do that without a trailer mod done at a garage that can weld on a new steal mount for the winch or something like that

FYI
I'm not sure what your V arrangment is like on the US trailers? but I stuck a 2500ilb 2 speed winch in the regular position, but also a small 800 ilbs one directly mounted opposite using the same bolts holes. I use this looped over the top of the V snubber so I can lift the front of the boat at the same time pulling it along. Doubles as a safety strap too elbeit atached the the same bow eye.

Hi guys, firstly let me introduce myself. Laurie Hooper is my name. I am an Aussie but I reside in Thailand. I have been the proud owner of a 26m for approximately two and a half years. Great boat and heaps of fun . BUT, the trailer and winch is another story. I have just recently had my whole trailer upgraded to a tandem. New draw bar as the original was nearly rusted through, and I am told if I would have used it a few more times, my boat and me would have parted ways. On the highway somewhere. The whole trailer had to be sand blasted and epoxy painted. A lot of rust to remove. The winch, I replaced it with a two geared winch. The original was not up to the job. I certainly feel a lot safer having made the trailer into a tandem. With a spare wheel mounted opposite the winch. All of these repairs had to be made after only a couple of years of use. The boat itself is great, but the trailer should be made to a better standard from the factory.
