State by State Trailer regulation source

Post by Catigale »

Cross posting from the Main Board for reference

On edit - see state by state regs here will also post this in Trailers and Towing for reference

Synopsis - most states require surge brakes once you exceed 1500, 3000, or 4000 pounds

The following states do not have surge brake requirements as of 2004

Kansas, Kentucky, Missouri, Oregon, Wyoming

The following states have a 4000 pound minimum surge brake requirement
Delaware, North Carolina, Rhode Island, Texas, Massachusetts I note 4000 pounds is the lowest one could realistically hope to reach for a Mac, trailer, and motor.

All of the above states would be good ones to avoid travelling in front of anyone with a trailer imho.....

Brakes or surge brakes?
My recollection is that only three states don't require brakes on a trailer that has the weight of a Mac 26 X or M. Alaska, Texas, and one other.
Not sure about Brunai and the Yemens.

:D :D :D

The link says these states require separate trailer brakes, but you are correct, they dont have to be surge brakes. I think surge brakes have to be the cheapest way to add a brake system though....

....and a quick update......

the only other countries that have not officially adopted the trailer surge braking system are Liberia (in western Africa) and Burma (also known as Myanmar

I think you could use your anchor.

I can picture it now...

Bill going down the road, towing his M19, his arm sticking out the window holding a string. That string running back to the stern, where its tied in a slip knot, holding up a dangling anchor...

Do you think we can get a patent on that?

Sure, if we get the application on file today, we even preserve our foreign filing rights...

Do you think this is a better idea than my long-sleeve, flannel Hawaiian shirts?

No, those shirts are much more novel...

Besides, there may well be a Fred Flinstone cartoon out there that would be prior art to the anchor/brake application...
