Any U.S.-made Outboards?
I love my Honda and I'm sure that if I put enough parts in it it'll be a fine motor some day. But I was wondering, are any outboards made in the US anymore?
I was talking to a friend who said Johnson and Evinrude are both foreign owned now. I understand Tohatsu makes both Yamaha and Mercury outboards.
Think OMC's gone too.
Have American-made outboards gone the way of the TV and PCs?
Are any made in Japan for that matter, or do they have them built somewhere else?

Most 4 stroke Mercs
Most 4 stroke Mercs will for now continue to be built in AMERICA !
One of the big reasons for me buying the 50 HP Merc BF was . . .. . Made In The USA...

Richard, it really disappoints me to have to share this (I loved the idea of our Merc being built in America too).
2.5 - 30 HP Mercurys are manufactured at a new 275,000 square-foot joint-venture plant with Tohatsu in Japan
40-60 HP Mercurys are no longer being manufactured in the US and are now being manufactured at a new 174,000 square-foot facility in China. You probably got one of the last made here.
70 HP and larger Mercurys are manufactured in the US, however, the four-strokes other than the Verado use powerheads manufactured by Yamaha in Japan. These are being replaced by US made Verados.

Interesting History
What ever happened to the Bail A Matic concept. You'd think that would be a big selling point.
One might think we were born a generation or two to late for some really cool stuff. But then again, the 26X didn't come out until 1995.

Scott Atwater
I spent many a summer on Lake Marie In the Chain Of Lakes . A young fellow with a 16 or 17 ' Wolverine and a Scott 60 was one of the fastest boats around. Ours was the Thompson 16 with a Evenrude 35. . .2 of 3 boys learned how to Salome and trick behind that boat. Go figure and it was no doubt not much faster than Marks sail boat.

Cool motor, Moe! It's based on the old Crosley marine/Navy engine - a very nifty design.
BTW, you can still buy them! Available in either 55 or 85 HP models!
