Re: CDI Return Line
The length is going to depend on what sail you are flying. A Jib is going to need less line then a 150 Genoa. I can’t measure mine now because it’s still in its winter wrapping. As to price, unless you compare apples to apples, the comparisons are useless. Do you live near a West Marine?

Re: CDI Return Line
By "Return lIne" I presume your talking about the actual furling line.
The length is dependent on the type of head sail you are running, A genoa requires more turns on the drum and therefore more line

The size is there but not the length. I'm not sure how much I used but it will also depend on the size of the sail. Maybe use a clothesline or something of about the right diameter for a measurement or just get extra.
I bought a lot of running rigging recently from here...

... and they have the best prices I could find on New England Sta-Set. It is considered to be one of the best lines for cruisers, but they also carry other choices. I've bought non-New England for the Mac in the past but in the future will stick with the New England Sta-Set as I think it is better and will last longer,

Re: CDI Return Line
If you are flying a jib, you can probably get away with the 3/16. If a larger sail is flying, go for the thinner line. It can get very tight inside where the line is stored, and thus be very difficult to initiate furling.

Re: CDI Return Line
BWY sells 3/16" x 45 ft for the CDI furler. Probably sized for a genoa, which of course will also work with a working jib. YMMV.

Re: CDI Return Line
I did de-core some of my line as per the instructions to take care of that, so that is an option if you run a genoa like we do. I do like the 3/16 as it is easier on the hands,NiceAft wrote:If you are flying a jib, you can probably get away with the 3/16. If a larger sail is flying, go for the thinner line. Re: CDI Return Line
I think it’s about time for R Rae to let us know what head sail is the winner of this CDI lottery.

Sorry ! Not enough info.
I am presently running the STD jib, and have no plans to change this.
West marine did quote 3/16 Dia. Dynema @ .79 cents per foot, would this make be appropriate for the job at hand?
Thanks for your quick responses

Re: CDI Return Line
Personally I think it would be way overkill for what the line is used for. I'd think a good Sta-Set line would be more than adequate and a lot less money. That is what we have on both boats. I've never seen Dyneema in person so don't know what the feel is like in your hands. If you like the feel and want to spend the money probably not a down side to using it though. I'll be interested in if anyone has experience in using it in this application,R Rae wrote:...West marine did quote 3/16 Dia. Re: CDI Return Line
Dyneema is strange stuff, the 3/16 line I have isn't hand friendly, the coating is a bit course and the line a bit stiff.
But you look at this thin thing that is like string and think, wow I could tow my car way easy with this stuff

Re: CDI Return Line
I had a 4mm dynema furling line - did not work. The dynima did NOT hold in the clamp.
