Has anyone watched the Speedy Rigger videos?

Post by Bwagner »

Hi, we're new to sailing and wondering has anyone
watched the Speedy Rigger videos and are they helpful
at teaching how to raise and lower the mast?

Yes, and I found them quite helpful when I was a newbie.

Mybre investing in a quick rig kit from BWY might help too http://shop.bwyachts.com/product-p/3459-1v0.htm

Thanks everyone! I think we'll give the videos a try and thanks for the suggestions
for a quick rig extras and checklist! When we know what to check we'll need a list HAAHAAAHA

The BWY quick rig kit has been very helpful. Especially the ability to lower the forward lifelines. The best technique I have found has been using two lightweight tie down straps to secure and center the winch rod using the lifeline stanchions. Before I did this I did screw up the winch attach point brackets. Using the straps, the mast is much more stable raising and lowering. If your not doing this, try it, you will like it.

I purchased the video and thought the quality was terrible. The editing was very bad (non-existent) and playing on a modern LED tv was a very blury experience. There was good information but for the price, I expected a much more finished product. The sailing portion also had good information but again quality and editing was a huge problem. I'm thinking of doing a video series for the Macgregor 26m on youtube with proper editing and 1080 quality.

Speedy vs. Speediest...

I've not seen Jeff's Speedy Rigger video, but from the stills, it looks like the secret to his ten minute rigging is deadlifting the mast into position - not something that I bet a lot of us can do. I may have been able to rig without the MRS five years ago but certainly not now! Jeff and Erik certainly have their quick rigging down, but when one lives down the road from the launch ramp, it's easy to leave your boat half-rigged vs. rigging for on-the-road travel.

eodjedi - you should pursue that project. Each of us has our own tips and tricks for getting the job done and video is a good way to learn from each other. I too have started documenting the process on my boat, but my project has fallen by the wayside as other projects take priority.

It's too easy to go straight from record to upload. Unfortunately, there are bad videos on good topics out there when the amateur videographer doesn't consider the end product from the viewers standpoint. So much more goes into making a quality video that not only conveys information, but holds the viewers interest. Finding your voice / presentation style, setting the shot, considering light and shadows, background activity / noise, editing, timing, etc. I've got a fair bit of footage, but as a beginner to it all, I am experimenting with re-shoots and ideas.

So I plan to get a DJI Mavik Pro drone to help with recording my rigging process. That will force me to get my rig up in 20 minutes or less considering that battery power to keep it running. I'll just set it to follow me from a safe distance and go work. Who would have thought how far technology has come since the original speedy rigger videos came out.

Using a drone to record the rigging process will certainly add a unique dimension to your video!

The magic in making a video to convey a message or tell a story, is in the editing process. IMO- the constraint of racing to finish a task in one take based on the battery life of the camera could limit what is trying to be conveyed. Depends on what your vision is of the finished video.

When i was working on a rigging video, my approach with a single GoPro was to get multiple shots of different angles thru multiple takes. My 30 +/- minute rigging process took several hours to record to get the footage that I would edit down to a ten minute or less video. The quality drawback with that was the ever changing ight and shadows over the time of recording.

That said, there is no right or wrong way to create a rigging video, be it an aerial view actual time documentation or a multi-shot short vid of a longer event.

I got the vid a long time ago. The video is old so of course the editing is like a home movie. There were not a lot of editing programs or even you tube back in the days when they made that video so i was not really surprised - there was one tip on the video that (of course) they don't tell you about that is probably one of the main time savers - The guy in the video shows up at the boat ramp with the boom and mainsail already attached to the mast! (I feel I can give it away here because you really need to SEE the video to figure out how he does it) That is a GREAT idea but - just TRY to figure out HOW to do it! I have been trying to come up with a way to do it on my boat and have not yet figured it out. If I ever do it will cut my rig time by 25%.

Also - the jib furler - there is no jib furler in the video as I recall. That dang furler is a big part of what slows us down at the parking lot. I'm still trying to come up with a solution for that thing too that I like. My current remedy is to hang the furler off the jin pole line with a clip and that helps.

The problem with rigging is that you can invent great gadgets that make the prosses better (center mast crutch, various MRS systems, Furler supports, Mast Crutch Mods, etc . . ) but all those "gadgets" also add more time to the whole process and more equipment. On the video he uses the most simple rig and hardly no extra equipment. That's probably the key to the most "speedie"

I think everyone should have the video just to see what he does.

Well, I know I can certainly shorten my rigging time by half by starting the timer after undoing all the travel preps and installing the boom & sail, then deadlifting the whole thing without the MRS! It's like the Rosie Ruiz of rigging!

Mmm, I just ordered these vids. Now i'm wondering if they're even still available?

Anyone know of a really good video that explains sailing the :macx: ?

I've invested in the 'esailing simulator' computer game but right now I'm having more trouble figuring out the game's controls than actually learning to sail... :P

well, I can't say anything about the video...

BUT I can tell you all... that I enjoyed the quick pin from BWY for the furler/headstay mount.

NOW... a 10000000times better pin I made myself... :D It solved many problems like doing it alone in open water from sitting alone in the bow... having problems to exact center the pin in the hole becouse the most importent ONE millimeter was missing so you can't pull right...

If you want to know about I will make a pic next time I go to DIEGANE... :macm:

Please do!

When my boat arrives I'm going to be entirely clueless about the rigging, so any tips to make life easier will be hugely appreciated :D
