Clam cleat for halyards?

Post by jrcanoe »

Would a clam cleat work for halyards. I don't see much need to be able to raise sails from cockpit but would like to be able to lower sails from cockpit. A double deck block+ deck organizer+ double rope clutch= 300$ vs 20$ for two clam cleats. Or I could go in between for 120$ for two of these. Image

If you are ever in very choppy water, with the deck unsteady under your feet, and the wake of a boat under power smacks you, you will suddenly appreciate pulling a line from the safety of the cockpit. :D

I went eleven years before I ran all lines aft. Slow lerner :( :D

That looks like it would work fine.

Yes it would be nice to be able to raise sails while also steering, now I motor away from dock, anchor and then raise sails.

Thanks! I have never seen those spinlock cleats. They are much cheaper than clutches and it seems much easier to unload than a cam cleat. Getting boat bucks past the Wife is one of my biggest problems.

I never anchored. I just headed to the wind at an idled speed, went up on deck and raised the main. I just got tired of that. It took eleven years, but I finally got tired of it. I guess I'm getting old:

That's what I do now, even with halyard brought to the cockpit, as something often gets stuck. But I pop it out of gear, so if I fall off, I have a chance of swimming back to the boat. :|

If I have to make more than one trip, I pop it back into gear, head it back into the wind, then neutral and go forward to the mast again. And leave the main sheet slack - but watch your head when dropping back into the cockpit, as that sucker will nail you if the water's rough. :D

But since it only takes seconds to raise the main normally, the boat rarely falls off the wind by the time I get back. Not enough to do anything, at least.

It looks nice, but I wonder what happens with the mast turning after the wind, so it do not spoil the airstream of the main following the mastcurve?
I will try another way to do it so I can have the wind following the mast-curve and raise and take down the main and and jib from the cockpit.
I will for both halyards put a couple of blocks per halyard to decrease the load near the bottom af the mast then I will have a cleat after that, also on the mast, than the lines (to winsch) and cockpit.
When I raise the sail I will lock it on cleat standing in the cockpit. And when lowering the sail make the halyard away from the cleat standing in the cockpit.
Sorry it was a bit difficult to explain, but I think you will understand.

I installed a pair of Harken 140 Pivot Blocks with cam cleat on my 26X for the Jib and Main Halyards. Easy install, pop rivet to the mast. No turning blocks. No additional cam cleats. I have been very pleased with it. The original halyards are long enough when the sails are down to reach from the cockpit at the hatch to raise the sails. Once raised the the ends are dropped into the main cabin. I do not have a furling jib but leave the jib in the front hatch to hoist. Lowering the Main is easy and I can toss a couple bungies around it to secure it for docking. I have always single handed the boat even with 6 people aboard.

I think I have decided to go with these. But I'll have to downsize to a 6mm halyard.
