Steering, Removing the Pedestal

I have just bought 26M built 2009 and live in Sweden. I was very irritated of the big place the pedestal took, so I took it away and connected the starboard rudder with a pipe reaching slightly over the hull and there I put a rudder head. So now I am glad again. Are there any of you forum members who made the same thing? Or what do you think of that idea?
