Thoughts on this Mac 26D?

Post by dlandersson »

I'd appreciate some input on this Macgregor 26D - not too far away. 8)

um, wow

#1 is that trailer is not for that boat. you would never be able to tow it anywhere on that. i mean if the ass wasn't dragging the pavement someone like ME would most certainly try at least a short distance if it was local. but it looks like more than half the boat is not supported, and they have some blocks under the stern

#2 I would totally buy it at $500...I see enough value in a strip to make the $$ back if I find out she is NOT a candidate to restore...if she is, then there is more $$ there of course. Cabin looks full of goodies, but there is no mention of sails. I don't see a rudder...I do see a whisker pole I think. and an inverter/charger? other misc stuff...

So if your sole intentions are to restore and use I wouldn't buy it...you'd need a trailer for sure. and you'd want to SEE it in person if that is your plan

But if your nuts like me, and if it's only a few blocks away, and you could go by and see what it includes then I'd go for it, but most likely as a parts boat

Buying these junk sailboats is like storage wars, you never know whats INSIDE...and I have found hundreds of dollars in new gear (bimini, Garmin, VHF radios, etc)

Cheers

And I would be buying it to sail it - 26D are reputed to be "wicked fast".

I did wonder about the trailer - and the brown thing under the rear. :|

well if its not far

if it is, you could still make your $500 back if the boats a sh~t, but if you gotta "travel" to get it.... :(

hmm, got auto-edited...so I guess Sh*tbox is offensive lol :D

Your point about the trailer gives me pause. No rudder, ok, no outboard, sorta ok, but wrong trailer? .... :?

don't be a P**SY :D :D once you start buying these junk boats you wont stop though

it really depends on how far, and if the trailer sits straight when you hook up...I'd try it cause I'm nuts, but prob not more than a few miles or so...maybe hook a car dolly to the back of the trailer to support the stern. 8)

How far are you from it?

Lots of questions. As mentioned, rigging? Sails? No motor? Keel?

It's got lots of potential. These boats clean up easily. Sometimes, an ugly dirty boat is a bargain because the seller can't see the potential.
Gotta ask yourself if you are up to restoring it. Really, these fiberglass boats don't have much that can go wrong with the glass.

The trailer looks like a D trailer. I know the boat hangs off the back, but that's the way it is. Nevertheless, you would want to look at it carefully. With recent threads about rusted trailer parts, I would want to inspect that carefully.

For $500, I would go for it if I had the time. New sails, motor, probably $1200 investment. Rudders and keel would be a big question.

I've seen these boats on the water and they sail very well.

That boat also has Arizona tags. I would question clear title on it. There was a member who bought a boat and had big challenge getting it titled. Stolen or "abandoned" boat he bought.

Another good point. Why Arizona registration on a Missouri auction? WTF? :?

I agree, that looks like the proper trailer for this boat. The blocks under the stern area are so the boat does not raise up if someone climbs up in to the cockpit. Looks like there may be some sails up in the v berth area ? A few more interior pic's might have answered more questions. Shoot the seller off a few questions or possibly call and speak with him if that is an option.

As far as the dirty ugly, that will clean up quite easily, you will be surprised.

good luck, Chapster5

And in fact I have sent in some questions. I asked about seeing the boat. Friday night (Halloween) I received the reply "the storage area is open Mon- Fri 8 - 5 pm." So this being Sat, no, I can't see the boat. :P

Anyone know the tire size for a Mac 26D trailer? :|

At first I was sure that wasn't the right trailer: looks way too short compared to the X trailer. But Google images of the 26D seems to show that they were all built like that.

You would need some time to work on a boat like that. And a generous budget to fix it up. And a place to put it. Good luck!
