MX New Galley refit with Yeti Power System

Post by KookaSnook »

Another view of Stage 2 fit out complete. The Yeti has plenty of different plugs, sockets, usb fittings to charge our phones, laptops, iPads, lights, etc. It also has an inbuilt 1200w inverter to run our microwave, fridge etc. Our marine electrician also mounted LCD strip lighting under the shelving which will really light up the whole galley at night. He also bought us two of the latest types of outside LCD lanterns that can be piggy backed out over our mast. They only draw 3 amps and he said this will light up the whole boat at night an avoid any one running into us while at anchor. Had a few bad experiences over the past month with near misses.

I think its one of those solar powered lith ion battery power stations. They were selling them at Cabelas. Never thought of putting them on the boat though. SMRT :P

A Battery? A battery that runs a microwave and a refer? I bet it weighs a ton. Lithium Ion batteries store a lot more power than anything else - right? I guess that is the point of this gadget, right?

Goal Zero Yeti 1250 Solar Generator Kit

Safe and silent for indoor or outdoor use
Powerful 1,250-watt generator
Charges from two included solar panels in 20-24 hours
Provides power to multiple AC, DC and USB ports
A silent, powerful 1,250-watt generator that charges from the free and clean energy of the sun using two Boulder 30 solar panels (included). The safe and quiet operation is ideal for indoor or outdoor use, and is powerful enough to run refrigerators and freezers – even critical home-healthcare equipment such as heart monitors and oxygen machines. The panels can fully charge the generator in 20 to 24 hours on a 12-volt charging port, and a simple master switch provides power to multiple AC, DC and USB devices. The LCD readout tracks usage and shows current battery level. Both the generator and panels are FCC- and CE-certified. Generator has six-month and panels have one-year manufacturer's limited warranty. Includes: One generator, two Boulder 30 solar panels, one carry case for panels, one roll cart.
Generator dimensions: 16"L x 11"W x 14.5"D.
Generator weight: 103 lbs.
Solar panel dimensions: 21”L x 18”W x 1”D each.
Solar panel weight: 6.5 lbs. each.

This (i believe) is the biggest they sell, I had originally saw it and thought it would be useful for hunting camps. Never thought to put it on a boat…how'd you mount the panels?

I did see something cool, they were solar panels that folded up like a blanket. They were very flexible like a fabric.

I thought it would be cool to make the bimini out of solar panel material like that.

at 103 lbs. for that size, it's lead acid, not lithium ion. Essentially it's an integrated battery, inverter, and charger with solar panels all setup and balanced and in a nice package.

We originally had an 80watt solar panel mounted on our bimini that charged two batteries which are mounted in the hatch under the Yeti. The Yeti now powers and stores extra power into them as well so between the solar panel and the motor we shouldn't run out of power.

Photo of where we mounted our solar panel on the bimini:

After Xmas our guys will commence work on Stage 3 which is an inbuilt fridge in the MX ice chest compartment and we are adding an outside opening ice box in the cockpit behind the head with a separte vented gas bottle compartment. We also added a 100 litre water bladder under the ice box compartment and have a shower and hose we can connect to wash down the boat and have a shower out on the cockpit.
