Looks like someone needs some setup help

Post by beene »

Returned from sailing trip to find a nice new blue M right across from where I park my M at storage facility

From what I could tell...
- mast was mounted below pulpit pin point
- mast was sideways and starting to bow
- dowsar full enclosure added, but looped over top of the mast?
- new etec 60
- no mast side stays installed....

He could probably use some help with the set up

I also noticed the deck hatch looks sealed closed?

She sure looks like she has never seen use

The bowing would be expected the way he has it turned. I add a 2x4 block at the mast to support it.
Yea, looks like he took off all the mast rigging. Weird. So much work to reattach it all.

You need to leave a note. "Need help, I have the same boat, call Beene at xxxxx"

Maybe it just arrived out of a container? Just a thought. It sure is strange.

The mast is just pinned with the foot upside down. That's how I generally do mine when travelling.

I wonder if someone bought it and never got around to rigging it? I believe that's how they ship from the factory sans dealer prep if you don't add dealer rigging prep when you purchase--stays are inside the boat coiled up.

Or perhaps it's owned by a dealer?

"Mast was sideways and starting to bow" - please, just show me how, without adding a post factory contraption/cradle/brace/re-deigned roller, you can rig that mast so it does not flop on its side in the transport configuration. I have been trailering for about three years with the mast on its side without issue - would rather have it sitting tall but cannot figure out how to keep in place that way (kind of like placing an egg on the table - how is it going to naturally lay? Upright on end or on its side.).

Drill a hole in the mast foot plate

Take out the eye bolt that is used for the boomvang at the bottom of the rotating mast

Put a 1/4 inch pin through the eye bolt hole just removed and trough the mast plate hole you drilled

Done

Will hold the mast in a vertical down position that stops the wobble, no more bend, no need for bracing in the middle

The challenge was: Can it be done as the boat is delivered. But the real issue is - Does it matter? How was it designed to sit when trailering?

Sorry, I thought you said "please, just show me how, without adding a post factory contraption/cradle/brace/re-deigned roller"

Did not think drilling 1 hole fit any of that description

Does it matter?
Its your mast, do with it what you will
I for one did not like the look of it sagging sideways year after year
Aluminum starts to take a shape after a while like that
Much stronger resistance to bending when you take the time to drill the hole
Keeps her straight and will not move, bend or bounce/flex

The :macx: mast, though it doesn't rotate and won't flop over when pinned to the bow rail, also has a pair of links from the mast roller axle to a pin through the mast just above it. Keeps the mast from jumping out, I suppose (though I always tie it down, also to prevent side loading of the helm and crutch pole), and would also secure it against flopping sideways in the case of the rotating :macm: mast.

Not that anyone would drill another 3/8" hole in their mast, but I just thought I'd mention it. :?

I picked up my boat the same way only with-out an eng. because I was not paying Dowsar to rig & clean up my boat when I was quite capable of doing it myself for free , all the running & standing rigging was in marked boxes inside the cabin , the main reason the mast is bending so much is because he has the weight of the full enclosure S/S Framing on top of it I always have mine laying under the mast

White hull'ed owners would never leave their :macm: in such disarray. :) :)

When trailering, I leave the spreaders attached to the mast and loop a line around the mast a few times. The line is tightened and secured to the stern cleats.
This keeps the mast from turning on its side. Use a trucker's hitch to keep it tight, but not tight enough to bend the mast.

I must admit I do not like to leave the mast in a bent position even when it's not on it's side - that's why I use the "Fish Head Bar And Grill Mast Support" on 'boat' when parked for long periods in my side yard.

I remove the "Fish Head Bar And Grill Mast Support" before I leave for the harbor. If I were going to travel a great distance I would leave the (whew!) "Fish Head Bar And Grill Mast Support" in place for trailering over long bumpy roads and freeways.

(Need a shorter name for that thing!)

I too have a white hull - it is kept in spotless condition.
