Buying New 26M with or without Dealer-Installed Outboard

Post by udannlin »

I'm looking to buy a new :macm: in the next month of so. The local dealer (Ventura, CA). is wanting to charge around $8400 for an installed Yamaha 50HP 4 stroke. Seems a bit high to me. Am I better off buying the motor separately and installing it myself or have another place install it? Has anyone here done that? What do you guys thing I can save and is it worth it? thanks.

(BTW, I can't wait for the 2005 Channel Islands Loop trip for those of you are going 8) )

Very high. Our Honda 50 was 5K or so installed by the dealer.

For what it's worth, I'm working a deal in Mobile, AL for a 60hp Yamaha 4 stroker installed out the door for $7100.

Certainly more for the same stuff in CA, I'd imagine.

As for installing it yourself, from what I'm told, doing so will void the warranty of the motor. I'm still considering doing it myself, though.

Let me know what you decide.

My Mac dealer wanted over $7,000 for a Honda BF 50 installed. I had it done locally by a Honda dealer for $6,400, tax and prop included. If you aren't set on the Yamaha, see how much an authorized Honda dealer would charge you.

buy at the dealer you will use for maintenance

In the world of outboard motor sales and service, you get much better service from the dealer that you purchased from.
..
Example for my Suzuki DF50 I could have had the 20 hr checkup done close to my lake at home by dropping it off at the local Suzuki place where it would sit in queue for at least 3 weeks and maybe 5 weeks depending on some other work ahead of it.
..
Or I could tow 150+ miles to the Suzuki dealer where I purchased my outboard (I had my MacGregor dealer install it). Where they did the 20 hr check for me on a Saturday morning while I waited. After, I took it out for a spin on the ocean before towing it back home.

Scott,
Good to hear from someone who's actually purchased a boat from the SoCal dealer. Looking forward to hearing more from you, (maybe even more about the dealer). But after all, it's really about the boats, eh?

Congrats on your new Mac!

thanks for the tips. Looks like i will be buying it minus the engine from the dealer. maybe mike in marina del rey would be able to help me out since they are only 1 hour away. I'm not set on the yamaha. Its just what they had installed on the boat on their lot.

Scott, did the shop in costa mesa install transom reinforcement for your new :macm: ? is it recommended or required for a motor with that amount of thrust and weight? thanks. I will also look into my honda dealer locally for their price.

If I was a Mac dealer, I'd either be in the business of installing engines for my buyers (as many do), or surely direct and supervise the motor installer. I'd expect to protect my buyer from a deviant motor installer, and therefore expect any good boat dealer to do so.

Meanwhile, my dog's not running alone. There are at least eight members on record here awaiting an answer about who is speaking for Mr. Inmon, and why Inmon or buyers of his boats have chosen not to speak for him.

Mr Inmon in my opinion: I bought my boat from him he set up my storage at the mast up in MDR in general has been a good dealer to deal with.
I dont know him very well but he does seem set in his ways as to what should and shouldnt be installed on the macs. He gave me the impression that he was not out to sell me a bunch of stuff he felt I didnt need. Even though I may have wanted it. I think he is honest but I believe he thinks the MAC is more day sailer then what some of us want to use it for. So he is geared to the day sailer side.
choice of engines with him are limited unless you have someone install other then his engine dealer. This is important as to finance your pretty much stuck with whats available through him. If you dont want a lot of hassle. That said If you really wanted something that Mike doesnt offer Im sure he would work with you as any other good dealer would.
I have asked Mike if he would want to post on this board and he said he didnt know about it, but if you look into the members list he is listed.
I dont believe any dealer can sell so many boats that they wouldnt care about the old customers. The MAC is limited to how many are available and maybe some dealers get more then others to sell. But being close to Macgregor plant does make it easier to pick new boats up with out shipping charges to the dealer. This savings could be passed on to the consumer, if it is I dont know.

Check out my post a week or so ago" 50 Etec price and installation". doing the rest of the work myself did not void the warranty. Bob

They did install two large, thick transom plates. I've had the boat out for about 6hrs now, 30 min at WOT (following breakin instructions).
I know that i will rarely ever run this tohatsu at WOT as it is to powerful for this boat, 50-70% and i should be able to keep up with the rest of the flotilla.

I bought my boat from Mike as he gave me the best deal as well as the quickest delivery. I shopped the Newport Beach Dealer and was not impressed. Mike was very personable and actually disswaded me from purchaseing many options, and didn't hesitate to sell me the boat, less the engine.
I had the privilage of meeting AYA16 at the Marina Del Ray marina while checking out my new boat and i look forward to meeting all the rest of you , some day(maybe channel islands and/or san juans flotilla this year), that contribute to this forum
