So about this new boat???

Post by 81venture »

I just scored something I am not even sure what it is yet... The title says "Bayliner Family cruiser 25" the Registration says "Pearson 25 Family Cruiser"

Image

I saw the boat on CL for $3500 (needs restoration)
Emailed the chap a few times, find out a. he knows nothing about sailboats, b. its a kid I know works up the street at an auto garage
Find out he's got only a couple $$ in it from some kinda trade deal and wants to get rid of it...

So since it's less than 1/2 mile from my house I go look...

Its in sorry shape...but the rigging looks new, there is that "safety wire" goes around the boat and all the poles...that handrail thingy (still learning vocab, sue me :) )up front (kinda like a cage around the bow) and another "cage" that goes around the back...so it completely encloses the boat...all in great shape

Mast in good shape, Rigging (stays) look new and I need them for the venture....
Inside is a mess....it has had water in it for a good while....but ironically front bow cushions in good shape...
Some electronics, a wiring switch panel, and a nice compass...

Came on a Dual axle trailer that needs lights and new tires but otherwise in great shape.....

Titles for both Boat and Trailer

All for $400

It's got a motor in it already...dunno if its diesel or not....

Plan is to keep trailer, strip boat...
Sell hull and whats left for best offer to a dreamer (it COULD be restored, just a lot more work than I want)
Put Mac on new Trailer
Sell my old trailer
Hopefully collect a little profit

Anything Would be good to take off I might not think of please let me know

And do you think this mast will work as a spare? The Step is different, and I haven't measured it yet but it looks the same length

Also, if anyone needs anything off this boat as I strip it (that I don't want) send me a PM and I will pull it off and give it to you

Thanks for all the great info and reading I get here

Well I'm not finding any luck on the internet yet on what it is...
Thought a Bayliner Buccaneer but the ones on the internet have outboard motors...this has an inboard motor

Any thoughts?

When you say keep the trailer to put a Mac on it, do you mean your Venture, or a Mac you will purchase?

My venture..I am keeping the 81 Venture....this forum and much reading convinced me this is the boat to keep

This new boat is not worth restoring in my opinion...but scores of valuable parts. and I should easily get my $400 investment back with what I sell off

I want to keep the mast if I know it will fit... and the safety "fence" that goes around it is something I want but is costly...now I have the whole thing free

Looks like this one....

..on Sailing Texas. Note the similar windows and the bulge around the top of the cabin at the front.

Interesting that it comes with a trolling motor. I wonder if that is because it had a non-functioning inboard?

Sounds like you got a deal :) ,

My plan is to strip, swap trailers, get rid of it... I borrowed the $400 from a good friend (cause don't the good deals always come when you don't have the funds liquid??)

So I owe him the $400 Principle

I was really after the "Fence" that goes around the whole boat...Thats expensive to buy/make
Theres also other little tidbits I am sure I can use...

Here are some more pics....inside is pretty bad....

Apparantly the motor is an "Atomic 4" and is gasoline....I do not know it's condition, but there must be some value in the parts

I think Sum nailed it with that distinctive cabin front matching the Bayliner

The Atomic 4 is a staple marine gas engine in the 28-38 foot boat range..lmy guess is with water in the hull the block might be a rusty hunk but you can probably recover your P just in selling parts of engine!

I call dibs on the muffler bearing and the piston returns springs!

F/up....just your distributor and starter on the A4 are selling USD at about 150 USD each.... :D

Moyer marine (Ohio?) is the definitive source for Atomic or Universal 4 marine engine...converted Jeep engines IIRC

Don't throw anything off that engine no matter how crppy it looks. I tossed mine off the yawl I had before i realized nearly every part can be sold.
Good luck with the "Fence" nautically known as a "pulpit" or bow and stern rails. The uprights are lifeline stauncions. They probably either will not fit or need mods. But you could get lucky.
If it was me I would
Remove and part out the engine.
Switch trailers
Clean up the inside and do a quick fix on the missing window and sell it for 800 bucks.
Providing it does not have major issues anywhere.

Thanks...Now I know what to call the "fence"...
It shouldn't be too hard to get them on the venture....the Pulpit and Stern Rails might be a little more challenging, but I can manage...the lifeline Stancions have bases screwed/bolted to the hull, so I can remove them and rework them to the venture...

Unfortunately the inside looks like a crack house...There is also the possibility there might be "residents" still inside (critters, wasps, possibly snake?) So I will have to be careful when I gut it and throw out the trash inside.

Been full of water, wood floor is rotten....unsure of engine yet. thanks for the tip...I will check it out more carefully, and if locked I will pull every part I can.....

So at $400 I never expected to do anything with this boat but a very QUICK cleanup, and get rid of it ASAP....The Admiral is non too happy about this hulk sitting in the front yard (the venture I moved out back near the shop) I should have the "fence" off this morning....

Another question? What about this mast....would it be good to keep as a spare? Sell it with the Hull, or sell it seperatly? I am keeping all the new stays for the venture....

I dont know if my venture trailer will handle the weight of this boat....the new hoopty weighs a LOT....I could feel it when I pulled it the 1/2 mile home....Also not sure how to "swap trailers" without taking both to the lake and floating them, and swapping them....I don't know if the hoopty will float

The Plot Thickens...

It's not an atomic 4 It's Blue, and looks like an outboard powerhead...twin cylinders

Can't find any mention of one of these on the web

Any guesses?

Still cleaning out the trash...mast is off the top and lying on the side

A friend posted a comment on the FB pic i posted (he sails) and says " I see it has a roller furling jib. "

the sail on the above thing looks like it might be toast, but I have to unroll it to see....but is a a roller furling jib something I should keep for the Venture?

I meant "Twin Cylinder" not "twin cyilnders"

It looks like a 50hp the way its set up...flywheel on top, plugs on the back...looks like 1 carby, but cant tell yet

That DOES sound like an outboard engine...which doesn't make sense to have the crankshaft vertical in a boat where you need it horizontal.
Jet drive? :D :D :D :) :( :? :| ahem...

I'm thinking that if you're going to try to re-sell the carcasse as a fixer-upper, you'll need to leave the mast, as I'd suspect nobody would want a rotting corpse with nothing on it to rebuild it with.

Otherwise you might need to just take what you need/want off of it, mast included, and strip it of anything stainless/bronze/copper etc. for salvage value and then drag the fiberglass/wood corpse to the dump, begging and pleading with them to take it off your hands (less the trailer, which you can resell for a hundred or two).

Not sure where you're located, but if the stern rails (rear part of the fence) doesn't fit your Venture because of the size difference between the two boats, I might make you an offer on them, as I've been considering adding that type of arrangement to my 26 (which might be larger than your Venture). Depends on distance and such, but just planting the seed.
