Which model Baystar Hydraulic Steering for 26X

Post by MarkSouth »

I think I am going to try and put in the Baystar Hydraulic Steering. My current steering is sloppy and there doesnt seem to be a fix.
I have searched this forum and haven't found any details. Has anyone done this mod on a 26X? Does anyone know what the model of Baystar is needed?

Thanks for any help!

What year is your boat?

Did you try the SS-141 Teleflex rack? The slop is not in the rack.

You will have the same results after you connect any mechanism to the same MacGregor stuff.

1998 26X

The C shaped connector that hooks between the 2 rudders and the engine goes up and down vertically. The would need to be fixed either way. Not sure how that was supposed to work, but it doesnt now!

the ram for the steering goes in an out at least 1 inch when I push the rudder back and forth, that part would be fixed ok...

SS-141 Teleflex looks like a replacement for what I already have. Maybe that is the problem? What else can make it so sloppy?

What rack do you have? The original Detmar is junk. I call it defectivemar.

I am guessing it is the original. Is there a way to find out? Do you think I should try and go to hydraulic?

Otherwise what should I replace it with?

Baystar Steering, will this work?

Post by MarkSouth »

I have a 1997 26X and would like to add hydraulic steering.

Looks like this one
http://www.teleflexmarine.com/products/ ... w/baystar/ will attach to the engine.

This Baystar attaches to the front of the engine as if the engine was the only thing in the puzzle. However as we know the engine is tied to both rudders. I am read partial ideas from others on this forum saying they used a Baystar but no one has said for sure this is what they did.

What do you all think. If there is enough room in the well to add this, do you all think its a good idea to attach the steering control via the engine?

Search this site for "Baystar Hydraulic"--Crikey has converted his boat to it.

I found baystar but it seems the system will not fit the 26X. The specs and pictures online are sketchy so its hard to say for sure. But one place has a chart and it needs 32 inches in the splash well. How do I get hold of the person you mentioned?

That is the kit Crikey used. He mounted it inside the boat and reversed such that it moves the rudder steering bar rather than the outboard directly. His post has photos and complete details. Might be in the mod section.

I didnt find anything in the mods. I have sent him an email from the forum though. Also it appears he has a 26M which I think is somewhat different.

maybe I should be looking at replacing the mechanical system with something new instead... any thoughts?

Hey Mark,

I too have a 97 X and it has Telefex's Seastar hydraulic system installed on board. I absolutley love it. No more weather helm and easy streering under power. I'm not sure if this system is similar to the one you are looking at but if you are interested PM me with an email address and I can send you a photo of how my linkage is set up.

Fair winds,

Here's Crikey's post on it: http://www.macgregorsailors.com/forum/v ... ar#p222713

He put it on an M, but the way he did it was really clever and should work well on an X. He mounted the entire system inside the boat and not in the engine well.
