26X cockpit cushions--new batch

Post by March »

Hello, everyone:
Here's a copy of Bob's message, concerning the possibility of getting a new set of cockpit cushions for the 26X.
Hi

If we make a batch of 10.

Price will be $399.00 not including any foam. We won't supply the foam.

We're planning to start making the 26X interior cushion covers again. NO Foam included.

Full set of 9 covers ( V-berth and all others in the main cabin ( EXCEPT the rear berth under the cockpit ) will go for $599.00

We'll be making them in a color that is almost exactly the same as the covers in the 26M. The fabric will be heavier and better quality than what's in the M

Let me know what interest you have for the cockpit covers so far and place mention on the Mac website that we will be making the interior covers again. Spread the word.

They will completely renew the old X interiors.

I'd love to have new interior cushions, but a new main sail is needed even more. :(

My exterior cushions are starting to break down after only 2 years and I am brainstorming for better.

Interior can be pretty easy. Quick cut of 1/4" plywood to the shape of the cushion, a trip to the fabric shop upholstery clearance rack, and fold the cover like a christmas present and staple gun worked for us. Eliminates the need for the storage covers too.

I am interested in the cockpit ones, although how would the foam work? Individually buy it, mail it, etc? And what would the total end up being? Versus just buying topsiders or something.

it is my understanding that shipping the foam core along, too, would raise shipping costs to ridiculous levels. Bob is suggesting we use the foam from the old cushions instead. I plan to do that and, eventually, to either spray the old foam with some M3 product or paint to acquire a more rigid, relatively watertight surface, or simply buy some closed-cell foam in some form (say, camping mattresses) sandwich them to the right thickness and cut them down to specs.

Ah, got it. So this is a replace/upgrade of the factory ones some of you have? Can you post a picture? I have been looking at different options.

I'd probably get new foam if needed and here is a good place with good pricing and free shipping and they will cut to size....

Foam is very easy to cut with a $12 electric carving knife. If you use the foarmfactory's wholesale site...

... and cut it yourself it is even cheaper. That is what we have been doing for our latest projects.

We have used them for all of our foam and really like the dryfast ...

...in the cockpit. If you decided to try it I'd also talk to the cushion makers to see about the match between the foam and the material. To go along with the dryfast we went with an...

...open fabric ( Phifertex Plus Vinyl Mesh Dupioni Poolside) from Sailrite. It and the foam breaths and dries very quickly. No more soggy damp cushions after morning dew or a rain storm. We considered close cell, but for us it is just to uncomfortable (hard) sitting on day after day. The dry fast is pretty firm, but not hard. We are going to use the same combination as described above on the Endeavour cockpit cushions. Even if it has just rained on it you can pretty much get by with a folded towel on it until it dries. We worried that it might not feel good on bare skin, but that didn't prove to be a problem.

If you like to do things yourself put the money into a sewing machine and have at it,

I'm going to have to pass. I think I will do something similar to Sumner's boat. I dont have any cushions on deck right now, so I'm starting from scratch.
Thanks for the info,

What about us M'ers any takers or would you consider making cock pit cushions for the M as well?

For our :macm: we covered the existing cockpit seat cushions with Sunbrella. Made new seat back bolsters and new helm seat and back bolster as well. Purchased the foam from http://www.foamforyou.com/out_door_foam.htm ( Drain Dry Outdoor foam 50 ILD). Finished by sealing the Sunbrella material with silicone camp dry. Completed the job in approx twelve hours using an off the shelf sewing machine from Sears.

How do you like the sunbrella feel? We have considered it before, but weren't sure about how it would feel.

Also if you need more foam in the future the DryFast (basically the same as what you got from the specs.) is $127 for a 3 inch X 50 X90 with free shipping vs. $222 plus $20 shipping from foamforyou.com for a 3 inch X 50 X 109 piece. You do get an extra 19 inches in length, but still a lot more per sq. ft.

http://www.foamdistributing.com/D/dryfast-foam.html

Maybe I'm missing something? The ILD on the dryfast is listed at 60, and desity is 1.8 vs. 2.0 but I'll bet they are both about the same product. We do like it that is for sure,

Sumner,
I Installed 1-1/2 inch closed cell foam and covered it with a Sunbrella like fabric for my 19 compac. I loved the material and used the seating as a float mat when anchored off beach. I also used the fabric as a boom cover while anchored and still have it in excellent shape after 7 years.
I bought the fabric from Defenders and was half the cost as Sunbrella. Teresa used a older Sears sew machine to fabricate and also sewn in Velco instead of zippers.
We both loved it and made accross cockpit for sleeping. Only draw back is in salt water to rince with fresh water.
I will put up the link as there are several picture of the chusions and the filler board in cockpit.
The wrinks that appear must be sun, angle shot or something else as the fabric it tight with just wrinkles sitting.
I should have used 1 inch closed cell foam as 1-1/2 inch was to thick and wasn't even close to bottom out on my 225 lb weight. Storage :)

The material is stiff when new, good for working with during cutting and assembly. After a little use it becomes more flexible. The feel is not unpleasant at all. Cost was $63.85 with free shipping for a quarter sheet, 25" x 54". We did not replace the foam in the factory seat cushions as part of this project. Our thought was to see how the Sunbrella seat covers worked, then make a future decision on replacing those with drain dry foam. So far we are happy with how the sealed Sunbrella keeps the morning dew and light rain on the outside of the seat covers. If we decide to replace the foam, we will certainly take your advice and check out Foam Factory. Overall we are happy with the look and feel of our cushions.

Hi Sumner, I have heard of some people using the Phifertex for the bottom of cushions, instead of vinyl. Are you saying you used the Phifertex all-around (top, side and bottom) for your cushions?
