Made a big gouge in the gel coat

Here's the pic . I'm worried that water may collect underneath the gel coat. Any recommendations?

"ridiculously embarassing" is a big part of boating I have found. And it doesnt matter how long you have been doing it. Sometimes things just dont go right or we, for reasons we cant explain later, do some pretty stupid things!
Dont beat yourself up about it. A bit of epoxy putty and its all sorted, Thats the good thing about "frozen snot' boats. Ya just cant kill em. They can be fixed no matter what we do to em!

With my last boat, I had to expoxy bog a few areas and the colour match of the epoxy putty and the gelcoat around it was pretty off. Rather than messing with gel coat and all that, I went to the hardware and got some paint charts. Got the closest colour I could find and got them to tint the smallest can of bog standard house paint they had to that colour. I painted over that area with that and it was virtually impossible to notice. That house paint never came off either.

Just remember to take your time with the 800 plus wet sand before waxing (then wax off!).

I would never suggest you had to tell us what happened, but I bet I'm not the first to do some bonehead thing to my boat. Like for example, when I was installing a device on my mast and made three extra holes because I didn't "measure twice, cut once." At least I learned about a putty substance I could use to plug the holes, but I know I'm not the first to do this.

Your gouge doesn't look too bad, so when something like this happens again from a fitting that falls or something else you really can't predict, you'll know what to do and that it's not the end of the world.

Worst DOH!! I ever saw on a sailboat was a guy who neatly arranged his lines-led-aft blocks in a line on the mast - and drilled mounting holes all on one plane, then watched in horror as his mast neatly folded up and fell as the holes had essentially cut his mast 3/4 the way through....

I dropped an anchor on the top deck and it made a gouge just like that. Gelcoat matching was a wash at best. I'm told BW has the best color match. I might order some...

Hit a stump or something the other day----lake's about four feet low. @#%!?? Didn't punch a hole, but I bet when I haul out this winter, I'll find it didn't do the barrier coat any good.

There is a place in ftl that I have used to successfuly match gelkote.

joe's auto marine. off ravenswood rd and stirling.... 50/pint IIRC. (you want it 'With' wax so it will kick off in the air).

marine tex is OK for a short term solution...

have you seen the pvc tubes on the bow to hold an anchor? (I have 2).

I have seen these on a few boats.. IMHO ONLY.... They cause a bit of Visual Confusion at the bow.. I have my Primary Anchor ( a Claw) in a anchor roller at the bow and my secondary anchor a ( Danforth ) in a bracket on the rail on the port side.. It sits lower than they do in the PVC pipes and causes IMHO.. less visual confusion.. There is more than enough room in the locker for 2 sets of ground tackle / rode and chain. Both those are secured to 5/16" SS U bolt in the bottom of the locker.. This is NOT meant as a final attachment point for the anchor!! Its intended purpose is so I don't watch the end of my anchor rode slip under the surface of the water as I drift away... In a major screw-up incident , would that U Boat with its 2 - 3" backing washers take some strain? No doubt in my mind they would.. but that's not, as I said ....Its NOT...the intended purpose..
