Lashing The Mast For Transport

Post by ggooch »

I know this is a very basic question, but I am curious about even the basics as I get ready to purchase my first Mac 25. How do you lash the mast for trailering? I mean I know you lash it, but I want to make sure I am doing it in the most secure way possible.

Thanks,
Geoff

We brought our 26 :macm: back to Minnesota from Ohio. One of the first mods for trailering was to make a PVC center support to stop the mast from bouncing on the road. It snaps into the bolt at the mast support and has a T with the top cut off to cradle the mast. Many have done the same thing and you could find pictures in the mod section. A line from the mast to the stanchions just forward of the cockpit helps keep it from bouncing also. Then bungee to the mast crutch at the stern.

I also bungee the spreaders forward to the stanchions to keep them from bouncing and keep tension on the upper shrouds.

Does this 25 have a furler. If so it's a good idea to have a support off the bow (wood or PVC) for the drum. Bungee that to the mast along with the shrouds and your done.

Happy trailering,
Wally

Many boats have a mast crutch that fits onto the rudder's pintle brackets on the stern, for the top end of the mast; and then lash the bottom of the mast to a point on the bow (pulpit, cleat, factory deck-mounted Y-bracket on some models). The mast crutch has a cleat and a little length of rope for lashing the mast down tight in it.

See this link for an example, showing V23 of Newport: http://www.robfisch.com/MacGregor/slides/CIMG7648.html

I made a support out of aluminum angle, mainly so that it was easier to get the mast into the step single handed. It's kinda hard to see in the picture, but there is a rubber bow roller that the mast rolls on. I just tie it down with a piece of rope. It's the same height as the bow pulpit, so I can get in the cabin without moving the mast when it's tied down.
