aux second kicker / mount ?

Post by ALX357 »

 I am considering finding a type of parallel pivot bracket that could carry a small kicker 6HP 4-stroke on the transom of my X, outside the rudder on the off side of the ladder. It would be useful for emergency if the main motor goes kaput, and it would be much more economical and quieter for long trip steady cruising at 5 mph or knots ....

 'Haven't yet looked for brackets that would work ... The bracket needs to be able to put the motor pretty deep, to keep its prop and intake underwater while the boat is rocking or pitching with waves and boat-wakes, and it needs to be able to raise up enough to get the prop out of the water even if tacked over on that side sailing, whether having to tilt the little motor, and if tilting is needed, it has to have the clearance from the transom, or over the top. 'Also cannot be allowed to interfere with rudder.

Any suggestions, brands, links, or specifics recommendtions ? :?:

Garelick seems to be the one of choice - I did this exact Mod, in the exact place you mention for my Nissan 4HP.

www.defender.com for a source

I managed to mount it where it can be used as a kicker, but still come out of the water under sail, just...I also trailer the boat with the kicker attached by the way.

If you EM me I will send you some pix - just leaving on a weeks cruise so wont be able to post for a while

One of those has a lift of 11.75 inches, the other a lift of 15.5 inches. Probably would be best to have the max amount of vertical lift, to hoist an adequately mounted long shaft motor above the water line without tilting it so much that it would have to be spaced too far from the hull, allowing for clearance of the motor head.

Take a look at our fall 2008 mod http://macgregorsailors.com/modt/index.php?view=1001 Seems to work well for us. BTW, we put a small transom extension on the dinghy to allow the long shaft better prop position. We had a companion mod about off season storage of kicker motors. 8) Tahoe Jack
