Very difficult to believe

Post by jjan »

Hi,
I have been trying to buy a new Macgregor 26M all day but I have had 2 different dealers refused to fit a motor bigger than 50HP. I am trying to give around $40,000 away but no takers as of yet. Has anyone else had the same problem? I have been informed that Macgregor will not give dealers authority to fit larger motors. This has left me very confused because there appears to be many Macgregors out there with bigger motors.

You can try buying the boat from the Mac dealer with no motor and then taking it to another dealer that sells outboards to install the motor of your choice

JJAN, Blue Water Yachts in Seattle, WA install 70 HP Suzukis on their M's. This is off their home page site for M specs. Give them a call, I'm sure they'd love to hear from you and sell you a boat. Do I get a finders fee commission :?: :D  8)

Only certain very experienced dealers are authorized to sell new boats with larger motors.

See this, http://www.bwyachts.com/Engine%20Choices.htm

The only other choice is to have a third party install the motor which may or may not work out well depending on the motor dealers experience.

Hi,
Yes I have thought of that but it just seems silly to me why there is no movement in the dealers even with the offer of a liability waiver. Many have posted that the 50HP is just a recommendation by Macgregor and not a lawful requirement as there is no max HP written on the compliance plate.

Contact the factory directly and tell them of your concerns. They will sell you a new Mac with a 60 HP E-TEC installed.

Hi,
Please don't shoot the messenger BUT according to the Macgregor factory today, no dealer has got written permission to install 70HP motors. I am well aware that BWY state this in their ad and I quoted this to the Macgregor factory who told me that I should ask to see their written authority. I was told in no uncertain terms that Macgregor have not supplied any dealer with that authority. I also do not think that BWY would publish this statement unless they thought they had good cause as I believe that BWY is a very reputable dealer, there seems to be a massive misunderstanding somewhere and I think BWY needs to clarify this ASAP
Still confused

JJAN, No prob, If it were real bullets, I'd look like Clyde Barrow on his day of reckoning :P . I've been shot so many times. There are legal reasons that have been discussed here just in the past few weeks on why this is the way it is. CYA legalese by Macgregor?. But I would think if some dealers are installing bigger motors then it's not really an issue. Otherwise they would no longer be dealers. If something goes haywire, factory washes hands of it and the dealer is responsible, but again I'm no lawyer so d**n the torpedoes and full speed ahead. If I could swing a new boat deal with a 70HP I wouldn't hesitate. 8)

Why not buy a secondhand 26M and get whatever motor is on it, changed.
The hulls are good for many many years, being handlaid fibreglass, and you may get the benefit of any mods done on it. Once the hull is out of warranty, and the previous owner has had no collisions, its about the same as a new hull...and getting it a bit cheaper will save some boat bucks...[ not an Aussie term] that can be spent on replacing any worn gear.

If you check the classifieds on this site you will see a 2006 26M with Tohatsu TLDI 90 for sale at only $23,980. If you are anywhere near Central Texas this boat is a steal. The owner is a friend of mine so I know that this boat has hardly been used, and the motor has only a few hours on it. I have the same motor on my :macm: and have been very pleased with it.

I bought My Boat from Bill at Boats 4 sail......... Bill asked me what motor I wanted ? I told him and then he set me up with the appropriate Outboard Dealer. One who sold what I wanted and that Bill was familiar with, and WHO had done installs on these boats numerous times before.... AS you see I chose Mercury as I am a, .... put your money where your mouth is........ Support America Kind of Guy  .... but the choice was mine as it is yours as well .
My boat came with lots of little and not so little things... that others here have struggled with reinventing the wheel so to speak.... to copy what Bill already offers..
Bill's a Sailor , But Not much of a sales man though....... He could have taken advantage of my inexperience and sold me a lot of junk! A lot of Junk I would never need or maybe never even use..He Chooses Not To........IMHO there are very few of his kind left around... Bill among a very few who's been selling these boats for years and has been sailing them for longer and has taken them all over sail........
