First time reefing :)

Post by Jimnkathy »

Last saturday me,my wife and 2 kids decided to go out to Mark Twain Lake for a day of sailing. The weather was cloudy and cool about 60 degrees with alittle bit of drizzling rain. The winds were 15 to 20 knots. We decided to try sailing anyway. I reefed the Main sail for the first time and used only 3/4 of the jib.

I was real pleased with the perfomance of the boat. When we were tacking we never healed more than 20 degrees and held an average speed of 4.5 mph. We had some waves on the lake that were lots of fun hitting at a 30-45 degree angle. :o When we were running with the wind I had the Jib fully out and to the port side and the reefed main sail to the starboard side. I was surprised at the speed we were holding. We were doing an average 4.8 MPH.

We were the only sailboat out on the lake that day. I started to think we were crazy for being out there on such a windy day, but I have to say I am much more comfortable with my mac 26x now knowing how she performs in somewhat high winds. Dont get me wrong I still have enormous respect for mother nature and the fury that her winds can cause. I won't get to cocky with her! :P

Even though the weather was crappy I really had a goodtime. I just thought I would share with you guys.
