Interior access panel mounting hardware question

I have a 2004 M and starting to look at doing some simple mods.. I've noticed a lot of access panels throughout the cabin that are just held in with what looks like stainless steel sheet metal screws .. some of which are stripped and have fell out... does anyone know of a better solution than sheet metal screws? Maybe some sort of "insert" nut?

Dont know about inserts, but using a dab of silicone on the threads works well to lock them in place without being too agressive if you ever need to pull them. If the holes in the liner are damaged or worn you may need to use slightly oversize screws.

Hi Jack.. I remember you responded to my post about South Shore and everytime I pass your boat I tell my wife .. "that's one of the guys on the forum".. Next time I see you on your boat I'll stop by and say hi... maybe you can give me a few tips on how to get in and out of the slips at South Shore.. I haven't hit anything yet but I can't say I'm not in a "panic" state when I approach the slip from a day out on the lake... You have a very nice boat by the way .. is it longer than a Mac or does it just seem like it is sitting on the trailer?

Get some 1/8 fiberglass and cut into 1 inch squares. Glue with 2 part epoxy and clamp for a few mins. Pre drill holes. this should hold for a long time.

For panels that have to be removed often I use those s/s clips that are used to hold speakers in panels. I re-shape to clip and epoxy it in position.
