twin engines

Post by frankpaynter »

I've been wondering about the pros and cons of using twin outboards instead of a single?

Does anyone know of any success or lack of stories???

I dont know of anyone using twins on a Mac, but in general the benefits are increased manouverability in close quarters and redundancy if an engine fails at sea. Negatives are extra weight and fuel consumption as well as a loss of efficiency... i.e. you get more usable power from a single 200HP than you would from twin 100HP.

I don't know about twin engines on a Mac either.

How about two sets of twins?:

Mad Mike did this on his X. I do not know if it will work on a M to well.

A problem would be if the boat was to heel, the high side engin would be out of the water a bit to much.

With the new EFI engins I do not think you would save much on gas.

I just can't see how you could make that work on an M.

But then again... I find myself wondering why the heck would you want to?

FYI: Mad Mike only used 2- 6 hp engines, so space was less of an issue.

I think of the MacGregor as a sailboat first that just happens to have the benefit of a larger engine.

Not that there is anything wrong with it, but apparently others view the Mac as a powerboat that just happens to have a sail.

I just have trouble understanding why so many owners keep concentrating on the engines instead of trying to improve the sailing characteristics?

To each his own, I guess?

For those of you with engine envy, consider this mod.

I also motor very little. 1 can of fuel will get us most of the way through the season and second fill is around 2 gallons. That will leave enough fuel to start the following season.

eric3a,
"I find no pleasure in zooming around at fast motor speeds. "

Eric, I got a good chuckle out of that. My boating background over several decades has been primarily with powerboats (duckboats, 26' powerboat, USCGR, etc). I bought the Mac 1st as an economical powerboat and 2nd as a sailboat (to learn how to sail). Unfortunately since I bought the boat I've developed a severe knee condition that is keeping me from learning the sailing part. But .... with my background, and my 50 suzuki, I'm not sure if I would describe powering around as "zooming around at fast motor speeds"! :) Now, if I had a 90 on the back of it, I might phrase it that way! :D

Bransher,
I, too, am more concerned with improving the sailing performance than the powering speed. Or, maybe, I just can't see spending the money for a bigger OB. I would really rather fix the transom so it would be easier to get in and out of the boat including fixing the questionable rudders. I'm very close to completing my centerboard mod. It will no longer tilt down but rather work like dagger board on the M. I really hope the X-dagger mod will prove worth the trouble. I should be able to create 740 sq inches of wet area. I hope I won't have to steer so much. I should also be able to hold a course better when turning on the awesome power of my Evinrude 50hp.
:D
