Please don't get me wrong - I am extremely grateful to some of you for your very helpful hints and tips, but having been a member of this forum for only a week or so, I get the clear impression that a number of contributors are just taking their preconceptions and personal fetishes out for a walk, and I can't say I've found it an overwhelmingly welcoming or friendly forum. I am a novice; everybody was once upon a time.
I have posted my fumbling trials and tribulations on here not only to ask for help but also in order to help guide any future neophites who face similar challenges; I hope they will find my ignorant but well intentioned comments more helpful than some of the potentially well-informed but smug and dismissive backchat which I have encountered.
Let's end this thread now, and when I've sorted out the engine and learned to sail I will post the results as a fait accompli, rather than continuing to test your patience with my naivite and ignorance.

Well well
I did say you'd be happier with a 40-50hp eng. did I knot but then you could go full hog like my mods power set up I'll be able to skim accross the water using half of my avail HP saving big time on gas thats whats having all that torq is for great for getting off the lake in a big storm or sail until 10pm when all others have turned back to port at 6pm & then booggie back in under power to catch up with the returned who are now under power at 5-7mph sailboats because the wind has now dropped to zero . sail your boat first for a couple of yrs when your shure its the boat you want then spend money on it Thats what I did
the semi V hull with hard chines on the mac19 requires more HP to get up on a plane not like the flat bottomed 26X also the rounded hull on 26M takes longer to get up on a plane , the semi V hull handles rough weather better & will let you power faster in rough sea's with the proper trim , the hard chines means when heeled over about 20-25 degree's your running in a deep V she digs in and will sail well in rough weather less tendancy to roll
and you have a nice day also
Cheers John

as a frequent fumbling, breaking, testing, changing, stoic myself, WE all started with these boats that way. I am still chasing an engine overheat electrical problem........... And I am an electrical engineer. (among other bad habits).I have posted my fumbling trials and tribulations on here
things that work perfectly on the trailer sometimes do funny things in 35 kt winds and 6 ft seas......
but at least I didint need the power then...
Funny how going fast does not seem important in a small boat in bumpy water.
Enjoy the boat.....playing with modifications is half the fun, and soon you will have more of the knowledge the rest of us continually try to glean from here.

now you're getting silly.....
Hi John
I am starting to wonder whether your obsession with flying handkerchiefs from the forestay isn't perhaps steadily becoming a diagnosable syndrome!
Having had the engine upgraded "Emma Zeff" is now laid up - probably for the winter - whilst I sort the rigging out; if you remember, I currently have a 3/4 fractional rig without spreaders or backstays. Current agenda is to run all the lines back to the cockpit, put in a pair of winches and install a topping lift.
On this topic, do you have any hints or tips on rigging electrics down from the head of the mast (VHF, wind instruments etc) in a way which still allows the mast to be easily taken down and stowed? I am thinking of some form of removable head unit connected to 27ft of flexible trunking down to the foot of the mast, which can then be removed, coiled and stowed separately when the mast is inside the cabin.
One final point - do you have the sizes for the anchor lockers and the deck hatch, and what tool did you use to cut through the deck? I use a jigsaw on the interior, but the liner is far thinner than the deck and the consequences of botching the job are far less grave.
All the best
Andrew

Andrew,
If you need any full (standard) rig dimensions then please get in touch. I've also got the topping lift and 2 winches on the cabin top, but no other extras as far as I can tell.
Having finally moved house in September my
is safely tucked up in the garage next to its stable mate my MGTF. (Can't do that with a
or
unless you own a barn!!) Unfortunately the boat is also covered in all sorts of household goods and chattels which makes working on it difficult. Also frustrated by so many jobs to do on the house that I have no time for the boat but will get to it in the spring having stock piled all those essential mods bits ready for the start.

Many thanks Martin
I alrteady have all the sail dimensions - which was a bit of a challenge, given my unusual rig setup (see Yahoo Groups) - and I have now passed these onto a yard in Southampton for work over the winter.
I was down your way last weekend by the way - now that I have my RYA Dayskipper certificate, I charetered a Dufour 35 from Plymouth and took the family out for a weekend in Salcombe and Torquay. Beautifuol countryside, and we even got the spinnaker up on the way back.
Although there is already an active UK Macregor fanclub, would it make sense for us to arrange a rally for
's next season; I know of at least 3 other boats in the UK, and if we set up a round-the-Isle-of-Wight flotilla, I think it could be a real blast.
before then I have the ridiculous and the sublime to contend with - this weekend dinghy sailing a Mirror on the Thames, then off to the British Virgin islands to charter a Jeanneau 40 over Christmas!
All the best
