I did a quick search on weight and modifications and didn't see any threads that dealt with the end result of modifictions. Some have mod'ed their boats extensively and in those instances where it was to upgrade interior comfort or reconfigure the layout I was just wondering what the overall effect of adding the weight was?
More stable?
Harder to trailer?
Slower - Faster?

I do think some stability is gained as long as the weight is low which most of mine is.
I've noticed no trailering difference but I tow with a Suburban.
Without a doubt slower, but I'd never leave the stuff behind just for a bit more speed. When we were loaded up for our 3+ week trip WOT speed dropped from 16 knots to 13 knots. I was actually glad it wasn't slower. We were really loaded down, but didn't miss ithe extra 3 knots. The only time I use WOT is towing kids on toys and we were not planning any of that. We could still cruise in our normal way although I'm sure we burnt more gas than usual. We do all our motoring with empty ballast and most of the 500 nautical mile trip was done under power.

Duane.....Your kids sure are lucky.....so many people now days dont want to spend time with the family....5 on an X ....for 30 days and more....you really gotta love each other....and even more important...is the respect and consideration given to each other and their "limited" space....you've definately been blessed.

My experience is similar to Duane's... I have lost about 4 knots of speed heavily loaded, but the boat is very stable and I think handles a heavy chop better. No noticable difference towing although I did take the precaution and upgrade my tires to a 8 ply D rating. Under sail I think I have lost a slight amount of downwind speed but I am not sure because I never had anything to measure speed when the boat was new i.e. light.
