Not uncommon on catamarans ... downward-facing exit ports might be an ABYC requirement.
The purpose is to help enable escape in the event a multihull capsizes.

I installed them their on my boat no problem . But I always close all my hatches before sailing or motoring in open water that way I dont need to worry about them then when it starts to get rough. I have 4 opening portlights & 1 open hatch I have 2 more porlights to install into the bottom black window stripe in the forward cabin I have a passive vent & a solar vent on the cabin roof that can be left open and dont allow ingress on water in rough conditions, the cross ventalation is great when anchored or at dockside I see lots of 35-45 footers that have opening ports that are in the water line when heeled to 35deg. or more ?, you can always install the none opening type just for the veiw & light Just dont sleep naked their on a hot summer day/night without drapes closed would'nt want you to scare the H_ll out of some poor unsuspecting nosey neigbor
Its part of my casting off list check all lines in & secure, enough gas on board close all openings, c/b up/down radio working etc etc.
