mooring question

Post by kdstone »

Hi everyone,

My wife and have a new to us 1985 Mac 25. Here is a few questions on mooring her.

when moored should we have keel up or down, rudder up or down, and lastly does anyone suggest a riding sail?

Thanks,
Kevin

Kevin,

I have an M, but when I moor her, I leave the dagger board down.

I have also just recently purchased a riding sail, also called an anchoring sail. I believe that it will help reduce the swing of the boat.

Others on this site (Frank C) use an anchoring technique that is supposed to do the same thing as the riding sail. Try looking up this topic

I recently bought a Mac 25 (off ebay) and it was located at Dana Point, CA in Salt water. It had the keel down, and it had been down a long time. Other than the keel was heavily covered in barnacles and the keel winch rusted in place, it was easy to remove the keel lock bolt and slide it onto a trailer: the keel just folded in. The keel did not have bottom paint. I suspect that was the reason it had all the barnacles. The bottom was almost clear of ocean life.

Hi

I keep my board up to avoid getting it covered in barnacles and slime.

It also knocks around if I leave it down making noise while trying to sleep.

kevin - Ive slipped for three seasons on the Hudson without bottom epoxy or paint with no issues....Im near Albany, well above the fresh to salt transition area. YMMV, Im not an expert on these issues at all, of course.

Yeah, there are enough other noises to contend with already.
We slip our Mac X, and keep all fins up. Even though my Marina is very wind protected, I notice that she sorta slowly drifts about 1 ft in all directions within the slip.
