Need high pixel quality digital picture of BF50A engine

Post by opie »

I have a new-to-me Honda 50 (BF50A) and I am not sure if the clear tubes inside the right side of the engine are correctly located. Can anyone link or send me a digital shot of that side of the engine? I am having a problem with the Honda going fine at 5500 rpm without ballast but with ballast it goes great for about 5 minutes at 5500 and then cuts itself back to 3800. Easing off and then forcing forward, I found a sweet spot at 4900 rpm where it liked that position. Just thinking that one of the tubes could be the culprit. Thanks. And thanks for all you do on this board. I was a lurker for over a year until last weekend when I bought a 1999 X. I've been out three times already and love it! During the past year I looked at 20 to 30 sailboats and started taking ASA lessons. I heard lots of "stuff" about the X and the M, but after serious looking, the X is exactly what I wanted and needed. Without this board's thorough and open discussion of everything, warts included, I would not have considered the X. Thanks!

Drain Tubes

Post by Timm Miller »

Those are drain tubes for the carbs......don't think it would cause your problem.

Things that could casue that is dirty carbs.....clogged fuel line....clogged fuel fliter.....something is limiting the fuel flow through the main jets in one or all carbs.

I wonder if it's cutting back due to overheating - perhaps the self-protective circuit is coming into play?

If its getting fuel starved..which I agree sounds likely, then it would probably run rough also once it starts starving. May be as simple as the quick connector at the tank. If you are always switching it on and off of a tank, the little o-ring inside typically craps out on me about once per year and it will start sucking a bit of air.

Also, the fuel pickup hose inside the tank could be cracked letting air in.

I . . . would replace fuel filter check and replace all hoses "open tank vent  " add sea foam. Then try again :) Might not hurt to have a buddy along with a power boat too.

Air sounds likley

Now that I know that the tubes are just for draining, no need to send a digital picture. Thanks. I think air could be the likely problem, and I will go for new o-rings and anything else I can find that could be leaking air.
There were no alarms and the engine never seemed hot.

Try a little troubleshooting before you spend any money. Pull the quick fitting from the fuel hose. Have an accomplice dunk the hose's bare end directly down into the fuel and hold it there for a speed run. If it runs fine to WOT, you've found an air leak, either the QR fitting or the tank's pickup tube. If you have quick connect on both ends of the hose .... more analysis req'd. Also the primer bulb or its end connectors are potential air leaks.

I think the clue here can be found by looking at what changes when ballast is added since he stated that he only has the problem when motoring with ballist in. Usually the boat rides at a different angle with ballast in so I would first be looking for some sort of contaminants in the fuel tank that either block the suction tube or are sucked into the suction tube when the angel changes. Possibly water or even some solids that may have found their way into the tank.

Don't you also burn more fuel with ballast in? Seems like that would make an air leak have more impact.
