Just a small point of correction in regard to tonne, and ton. A tonne is 2,000 kgs. A kilogram is roughly 2.2 lbs. So a tonne is around 2,200 lbs. Given that a ton is 2,220 lbs, a tonne is as near as anything to a ton.

Not that I want to be a crusader for metrics. We had to go through it in the seventies and it's better to look forward than backward.

When I was a kid growing up, we still had pounds shillings and pence. Land area was measured in perches, fuel consumption in miles per gallon, and at the horse races, they passed furlong posts on the way to the finish.

It's a bloody long process to convert, but you have to start sooner, or later.

just noting a typo, should be 1000 kg for a metric ton.

1,000 kg = 1 metric ton = 1 long ton
2,000 lb = 1 short ton

Metrics - the only thing the French can be proud of.
You cannot even settle on gallons (are they US or British).

How come French cars still come with 14" wheels?

"How many French soldiers does it take to defend Paris"?

Just quoting the Random House Webster's Unabridged Dictionary

metric ton
"a unit of 1000kilograms, equivalent to 2204.62 avoirdupois pounds. Also called tonne. [1920-25]"

ton
"a unit of weight, equivalent to 2000 pounds (0.907 metric ton) avoirdupois (short tun) in the U.S. and 2240 pounds (1.016 metric tons) avoirdupois (long ton) in Great Britain."

There isnt an ounce of useful information in this thread, other than a wanTON disregard for units of measure...
