Them pesky bearing buddies

Post by R Rae »

After every jaunt down the highway, especially on a hot day,I always had bearing grease clean up to perform on wheel hubs, tires and at times boat hull too.

Now, thanks to 2" wide duck tape which I run around the O/D of the B'Bs extending out about 1 1/2 " any projectile grease misses wheels, tires & boat entirely. Pity on anyone that's tailgating though !!

I've been using marine bearing grease for quite some time now, perhaps a little too exuberantly :|

I've always worried about getting carried away with the grease, blowing the inboard seal and getting grease on the brakes. I'm not sure how likely this is.

I expect you may be getting a bit too enthusiastic with the grease, Ron. There really should not be any grease flyng out of the bearing-buddies or your inner seal if they're installed and filled properly. Perhaps yours are leaking?

Yeah, I have those on mine just to keep the sand and grit out. Cheap insurance.

Lost one of my bearing buddy bras and found that a coke or pepsi can fits over mine to keep the grease from getting on the wheel. Painted my can black. I used my band saw....Murv

Wow. That must look pretty funny. Do you go faster than if you painted your can blue?

That's the nice thing about the M trailer, is that little blue disc, it tells you if you have enough in there. Just add grease until the blue disc moves under finger pressure. I never had to add any since it was new

Also, only use a hand grease gun. An air powered one may add too much or increase the pressure too high.

The inner seal is pretty tough. Under normal conditions you should be fine.

I used to always get grease spray on the wheels and boat. Always thought it was over fill, etc. even when I hadn't added any grease.

Then I switched the trailer to disk brakes and the kit came with new seals. Now I don't get a spot. Most likely the seals were bad all along. If you're getting spray it most likely means you have a bad seal.

I do have the grey caps on my bearing buddies, but I've never noticed much coming out that end, it was always the back.
