Cleaning Product
Good afternoon all....I was wondering if anyone has had experience with a product called "Marykate on and off"? I have some very nasty, brown stains, that were the result of leaving our boat in the water for 3 1/2 months. A friend of mine that I grew up with in Maine{he sails a Kittywake 23} suggested I try some of this hull cleaner. Thanks....Don

Never heard of MaryKate, but FWIW, I purchased some Phosphoric solution at HmDepot to neutralize rust during my trailer refurb. It's about $6 per quart, easy to find (paint aisle), and worked great on fixing the trailer.
Also, it worked like magic on the hard, scummy leftovers on the hull after two weeks in the water, while the trailer was undergoing maintenance. I think CLR might work just as well on the hull. Also, there's a Hull Cleaner product by Starbrite, but I couldn't locate any lately. Good luck (& hopefully just light scrubbing)!

I left mine in the water here in Jax for almost 2 weeks and got some nasty barnacles on my bottom. I tried the bottom cleaner from Starbrite (bought at West Marine) which is diluted HCl. Sprayed it on the bottom and brushed with a course scouring pad. It did a decent job, but I think I may have scratched my gelcoat with the barnacles that fell onto the pad.
I still have a little bit on the bottom, especially in the middle behind the middle trailer bunk. Next time I will try and let the cleaner work a little harder and just spray off.
Frank, did you have to scrub much with the phosphoric solution?

After two weeks on SF Bay the scum wasn't too bad, but it was definitely way too much for just a hose and sponge. No scrubbing with the Phosphoric ... I just soaked it onto a shop towel and rubbed the scum off - dried, caked yellow stuff plus the hard little crusties. Phosphoric also removed the rusty orange drip mark that had been trailing down from my transom drain for years (IMO, akin to a "muddy, brown waterline haze").Trav White wrote:Frank, did you have to scrub much with the phosphoric solution?
"At own risk" - not sure what the official word might be, but I'll be using more Phosphoric tomorrow.
