Whew - quite a bit of excellent information.
To your original question on the video hype and the relative speeds of the X and M - the boats are simply different, period. Comparing them to each other merely by commonality that they both are made by Roger is futile. They are different boats. I'm sure that, with the right skipper, either boat can beat either boat in a closed course race. I've sailed with some talented people who could beat me sailing a bathtub, they were so good.
I like the M because of her lines, hull modifications, rotating mast, cabin arrangements, and color. The X has better appointments regarding open cabin, seating, no carpet, etc. I've got some dings and scratches on Blue Bellaroo, but that's a part of sailing. No worries. I'll only wax her to keep her fast, not for aesthetic reasons - life's too full for that.
As for the video hype, it's a great sales pitch. The M passing the X with a rooster tail? C'mon, maybe a Corsair passing the Mac would be more like it. Roger had to do that to get the boat-buying public away from the used Xs and onto the new and improved M. There is nothing wrong with the X boat. Im sure that if the X was new, many of us who wanted a new boat may have chosen the X for many reasons. I just happened to like the M reminds me of my Hobie days. Just not nearly as fast, thats for sure!
Choosing a boat is a serious endeavor. Living with your decision defines satisfaction. Being satisfied with the limitations of your boat defines happiness.
I'm very, very happy with Bellaroo. She's a huge canoe, floats in a puddle, races on the water like a speed boat, sails well, looks great, and is just way damn cool.
I'd buy another under similar circumstances. However, if I could afford a slip, big boat big payment ratio, I'd certainly have my 36' trimaran I could just step onto, throw the lines, and get underway in less than 10 minutes be cruising the Gulf at 17 kts.
But my current budget allows time to rig the beast off the trailer, When are you going to be ready to go its real hot!!!!! says the lovely bride. . .
I love my boat!
