Wife saves the day

Post by James and Edeltraud Dunkl »

I just returned from a 10 trip (8 if you subtract the two days it took me to change my steering cable around to steer the right way while tied to a dock.) She saved the day on friday night returning to the marina. I decided that I would sail the boat back into the marina under main, two bouys into the entrance the bottom dropped out of the sky, the wind increased to what I believe was 25+ MPH and the rain was so strong I thought it was hailing as I made the last turn into the Bayou wind shifted and caught the main. The boat heeled over well past 30 degrees, while I struggled to let the main out she climb onto the deck and with the mast literally between her legs she sat on the mast and uncleated the main popping us back up to level. She saved me from returning from Iraq and sinking or at least grounding it again.

James,

Agree with both above. The only time my wife goes on deck is to get a sun tan.
PS. You should seriously consider running your main halyard aft.

I will look at doing that, were there any mods to to that. BTW, I installed the new Raymarine S1 wheel Autopilot, it is the same as the ST4000 w/MK II except that it has a computer that mounts below decks. Works great I was able to increase my average speed by over 1 MPH. I have never reached speeds of 5+ MPH continously. My whole trip ended up being 168 Miles at an average speed of 4.5 MPH. I also was not smoked at the end of each day.
