outboard shank size-

Post by Greg-TX »

Hey guys, I have a question regarding outboards too, If you have one of those kick out motor mounts on the back of your sailboat, the thing that pivots up an down with the help of a pull rope and pulley system---(I dont know the correct nomenclature for it)...but the apparatus that your outboard mounts onto at the back of the boat ...that helps pull the propellors up out of the water, or lowers them down into the water.
(If you already have one of those), is it better to get a "long shank" outboard or "a short shank outboard"?
I am getting ready to buy an outboard in a few weeks ....and don't need to reinvent the wheel -since you guys have all thought about this before I'm sure...Thanks Greg

Well, the vote is in...the long shank motor has been suggested the most often to me....that way if I am on a hard keel and have to use the motor due to weather, etc...I will still get thrust...thanks guys...
