cockpit video surveillance?
Allright you guys? reading all this stuff re: stereo leads me to questions about video? Many outdoor cameras seem to be wireless now. Are these reliable? Could you for example have a camera on your bow so that you could see forward while your vision is blocked by your genoa? Could you have cameras on top of your mast so that while you were sleeping offshore like MadMike you wouldn't have to get up to see if a freighter was about to run you down? Are there monitors that can take the elements. Can the monitor do double duty for viewing DVD's?
I think it's a great idea. You could use a simple setup like an X-10camera linked to a low cost LCD. Or if you have one of the new fancy chartplotters, a lot of them have video input.
Seems very workable to me. I like the idea of having a mast cam pointed down at the cockpit. You could capture stills too, to get that great bird's eye view they have on the magazine covers!

Hello:
They sell waterproof full rez (720x480) color video cameras for around 100 bucks. I was looking at them the other day. One camera for around $150 has infrared LED's that turn on when it gets dark and switches over to low lux night vision. It was safe to 100' depth so I figured to use it to check the anchor set without getting wet. Hey, I could watch the crabs walk into the trap. I also want to mount some cameras so I can cut to different views on our sailing videos. It would be cool, one at the top of the mast pointed at the deck, one at the bow looking aft and one at the stern looking forward into the cabin/cockpit.

As the great American philosopher Elvis used to say, "Thank you, thank you very much."
Scott's image cracks me up. Since I just "had" my first grandson, and I am pushing my daughter (lives 6 hours away) on a tri-daily basis for more photos.... live video feeds, if you look at Scott's picture, in reality there was some poor granddad somewhere who had to show that face to his friends.

Re: cockpit video surveillance?
Technology has come a long way since this post in 2006. Has anyone found a camera that can be mounted on the bow that is Bluetooth controlled and will display on a smart phone.
