She's gone to a better place...
She's gone to a better place...
An empty spot in the driveway and in our hearts. Don and his buddy Bob drove away with her a few minutes ago, headed to the great city of New Orleans, where she'll not be buried in snow for months at a time ever again. Don said for the next hurricane (and there will always be a next hurricane on the Gulf Coast), he'll put her on the trailer and get her out of there.
Don brought a picture of C Opal on her side in 10' of water in the marina. Testimony that Macs DO float when swamped, the outboard submerged and the companionway partly in the water. But there was a lot of boat well out of the water, and the lifelines on one side to hang onto. This is definitely a boat you'd want to stay with, even if it was holed. In fact, I suspect with my lard ass standing on the end of the centerboard, with halyard in hand, she would've come back up.
I think it's also a real testimony when an experienced Mac owner like Don has a second chance to buy any other boat, and choses the Mac again. Don also brought pictures of C Opal beached and anchored in less than knee-deep water at the Mississippi barrier islands. I'm sure that weighed heavily in his choice.
Don, I hope she brings you and your wife many years of enjoyment. It was really good meeting you and Bob.

Moe, even though the decision was made and you wanted to sell her, it must have been hard to see her go........I have had my X since 96, got her in the first divorce, raised the kids enjoying her...I can't imagine not havng Breezy to spend time on.... I am glad you have the Whaler to get "out there" on...........

At leat she is going to a good home and to someone who will keep her up. Even sadder than getting rid of a boat is keeping one and not using it!
I know that boating humor would call today the either No1 or No2 on the "boat owners happiest days" but I don't think any of us Mac owners would agree!
I fret about the day I sell Enterprise Sea and trade up to a Pearson 365...which could be comming soon...it's like selling your best dog or something....but is't the memories that count.
There is a line in Pirates of the Carribean that goes something like this from Captain Jack:
a hull, sails, a keel...that's what a ship is...but freesom....is what a ship means"
I'm sure I butcherd that quote someone help me out here, but you all get the message.
Fair winds (or roads) my freind Moe and when you are in Ca area....lets go out sailing on whatever boat I happen to have then!

The Legend of Moe and His Mac
A Mac 26x belonged to a knowledgeable guy
Who finally sailed it July
Encouring wife nestle near
Eager eye and willing ear
Winter has paled that summer sky
Moe didnt have time so he said goodbye
But he wont let memories of his old friends die
So shell haunt him, MacGregorSailor.com wise
