I know Tim Z had asked about getting a 1/2 hull model, this guy may be the answer.

MacGregor Models

Post by Terry »

Wow! This guy apears to be a skilled craftman with models. It would likely be pricey for one person to order a Mac model, but, if say a few dozen Mac owners wanted one then the price would come down. It might be interesting to find out how many Mac owners would like one, I know I would want one if the price was reasonable. Compared with some of the models this guy has, the MacGregor looks much more simple to build, I just have no idea what it would cost.

These are really nice, but the guy emphasizes they're hand made, one of a kind. The cheapest, simplest half hull there, not substantially more difficult than the Mac would be, was $350. You usually don't get much of a quantity discount for hand made stuff, but I suppose it wouldn't hurt to ask.

What about a one time production model, given the potential market it may not be feasible to hand craft each one. Creating hand crafted molds for the individual peices like Roger does at the factory might be the way to go if there is a sizeable market.

Well, if we wanted to match the Mac's quality/cost ratio we should probably just have it made from white blow-molded ABS, and mount it on a piece of unfinished scrap plywood! Anyone still have their "Mattel Vac-U-Form" toy from when they were a kid? :D

BTW, the guy Rich listed does offer do-it-yourself kits for $100... maybe if we asked for a run of them he'd give an offer that's somewhat less?

Mac 26 half models

Post by Todd Dunn »

Hi,

Terry let me know about this discussion. As a former Macgregor owner (1975 Macgregor Venture 21 bought new in May 1975), I am positively disposed toward Macs and might be interested in building a production run of half hull models.

I would like to know what people feel would be a reasonable price for a half hull model of a Mac 26 powersailer. It would also be useful to have some idea of how many people would be seriously interested in buying a model. That information would help me to decide if I am interested in developing the required molds.

If I was to offer Power Sailer half models, I would build the models in fiberglass. I would most likely offer both a simple half hull model and a model with the cabin and cockpit. I would also standardize the mounting board to a single wood type, likely a veneer faced plywwod in order to keep costs down.

Thanks for the interest in my models.

Todd Dunn

Hmm, the Admiral did ask what I wanted for X-Mas......

Absolutely gorgous work....BTW, I recently sold my 1976 Venture, hated to see her roll away too, but Love the X. So, when you say Powersailor, are you considering just the 'M' model? The X, and 19' are Powersailors also. Subtle changes and an 'M' and a 19' could almost be a similar mold perhaps?

I'd be interested in the :macx: model with the cabin top and cockpit if the price is right!

For something useful to pass along to Todd, I'm thinking the current thread on this is too non-specific as to be of much value. "I want one", but with no specific model (X, M, 19, etc) or no price you'd be willing to pay is sort of useless.

So I built a poll, X owners only please, on this thread.

Sorry, 19 and M owners, not enough poll options to include you on the same poll. You're welcome to start your own.

Well, Im going to bite the bullet and build half hull with the deck. Im going to use a 1995 as my reference. That is the model I have so I can refer to it as needed. The changes in each year are fairly minimal (rudders and brackets, stainless cleats, binical). I am planning on making a mold of the hull, binical and deck. If it works out, Ill make them available to the group. This will take some time so dont expect them soon. I may be able to get them out before the shirts though. :)
