Designated Backup Discussion Board?

Post by Zavala »

So while Heath had the board down for a spell earlier this week, I got to wondering.... is there a preferred alternate meeting place for the gang in the unlikely event of an extended board failure?

I'm quite sure it's not Sailing Anarchy.... maybe trailersailors.com? All I know is you can never be too prepared for e-disasters....

I think it would be a pretty good gag to all go to Sailing Anarchy for a few days!

Reasons Why not jump on SA

I am reminded of a story my father use to tell (and since he was from immigrant german stock, I am sure it was fabrication, but the point is well understood)

question: Do you know why the Puritans outlawed bear baiting?

Answer: Not because of what it did to the bear.........but what it did to the Puritans.

Some activities bring out the worst in our characters.

For those individuals who would recognize intruder actions (mac proponents) on their "beloved podium of altercation", their search for vengeance would be swift. and wreaking havoc is a specialty on SA. As foul as it can be, there are still jewels in the mud.

Many of those people do know how to sail other peoples boats, and sail them well.

I would rather not think about what they would do to our forum.

Perhaps a yahoo or other fallback interest group would suffice. But I for one, really prefer this implementation phpBB format (vs SA's cutthroat, honorless, character defiling, cauldron of belligerance and slime version). . Heath's seem fairly well suited to the exchange of real information

My vote would be to let sleeping devils (with too much free time on their hands) just lie. (no pun intended). Anyone who can take 10 weeks a year or more to travel around sailing on other peoples boats is way too rich.

I'd agree. SA is what it is -- and it's best to stay out of it in my book.

I like the phpBB format as well. Seems to me there must be some other good related sites out there the groups heads to. I'll check out Moe's suggestion of SailNet.

Mostly I asked the question to get some more cool web links -- and to know where to turn if this board heads south unexpectedly. I remember that dart week earlier this year. Had the jitters....

Which reminds me -- thanks Heath for the forum and site! :)

I had a cup of great coffee this morning, served in bed courtesy of the Admiral, and had this flash of inspiration on this thread

Last summer I figure I saved $250 in direct costs from help and posts on this board, and who knows how much more in labour..

I took 10 percent of my savings and passed them back to Heath via link to support the board, here

How about we all do this to some amount, and Heath can quit the underpaying Walmart third job he has to pay for the Board we enjoy...??

Obviously, the higher your rank , the more you should pay, except Admirals are exempt of course.

I like that. I'm due for a contribution.

I'm confident in this board but an interim backup site is a good idea. I would like to see a backup site for cruise planning. If we did Sailnet, what what message board would it be?

I wonder if Heath could put another link for cruise planing/destinations into this board?

I don't know if it will help or not, but I just put up this board on a lark.

http://www.saftillc.com/macgregorsailors

It has no other use than a place for everyone to go to when Heath has this site down, or his server is down. It is not as polished as Heath's, but it is my first board. Any suggestions welcomed.

Just register like you did for this board and it should work fine. I don't know if there is some way that Heath can backup to my site or mirror or anything else that can be done, but I am open to all ideas. Keep in mid that this site is just for temporary relief for anxiety and withdrawal pains.

Perfect, just what we need! Now all the regulars can bookmark it and we're set for a potential outage. Thanks Hamin'!
