Mack's taking over Catalina
Mack's taking over Catalina
If you want a true "Mack holiday", try Buccaneer days in Catalina next year! Incredible event with everyone dressed like pirates, I had 3 other 26 xs and one 26d moored alongside me at 2 harbors this past weekend. Spotted at least 5 more 26s among the over 300 boats anchored and 300 boats moored (estimates of 5000 people for this event!) I'm sure many more Macks among them. Anyone else here(Tom Root)? Nothing like passing rum back and forth to the x right next to you (Mike you out there?)

YUP! I was there and it was GREAT fun! We usually go to Avalon and its fun but we always disliked the 'touresty' feeling you get there... Two Harbors is a MUCH different story. Everyone there, at least that weekend, were True sailors! And Real Drunk too!
Had a great time! We were anchored by the reef next to Bird Rock...
We were able to anchor Way out there with the 'Big Boats' thanks to our 15 lbs hooker and 200' of rode
We decided not to take any food with us as we are scuba divers and that marked the opening of Lobster season!
I have never had so many lobster for 3 days in a row in my life!
Thanks for the good times!

I think the hardest partying group of adventurers I have been around has been hot air balloon pilots and crews. We crewed for a few years. The Admiral is a hot air balloon fiend. I lacked the required "round ones" to sit next to a propane tank and jet flame device, so I convinced the Admiral that a sailboat would be a much better thing to get into. Maybe I need to hot air balloon burner on my Mac. I could probably sail at 12 knots.mgm7000 wrote:Everyone there, at least that weekend, were True sailors! And Real Drunk too!

Bought them!?!? Are you kidding? Its the open of bug season! HAHA
Yeah we cought them and it was a BLAST!!!
Thanks for the warm welcome guys! I just found these boards and have found the MOD section VERY handy! We have a 98 MAC X with its fair share of Mods...
I'd have to say our best (most used) mod would have to be the SS rigging. We compleatly redid the whole, cheap as hull and dont even thinkg about taking into salt water, rigging and replaced with problem free SS. Expensive yes, but we never have to worry about it now. Here off the SO. Cal shore things can get pretty rough and 5' swells with 3' windwaves are not uncommon (As all of you so. cal. sailers know)
We usually just power out to catalina stay a night or two and power back, only taking about 2 hours each way, usually at night (I think its more peacefull) but this last time it took almost 5 hours because of the thick FOG!!! also the fact we were towing our 3 person SEADOO (Now thats what i call a dingus) as we usually try to anchor far out with our long rode.
Theres nothing worse than waking up with your boat crashing into someone elses or vise versa
Hadn't been night diving in a while so that was fun also! Ill tell you, theres nothing like scuba diving from your MAC at night! I must say, its not that easy and you are as cold as hull once you take off your suit! LoL
I would have never thought that 5 people could stay on that boat for 3 days with 3 peoples worth of dive gear!!! The only way we managed was to use the bathroom as a storage closet. (We took out the head a long time ago as it was the smelliest thing ever!)
We store our 6 tanks on the floor and just used them as a new floor... They seem to fit prefectly there....
Also I did a search for Scuba on these boards and I found that a lot of people are asking where to put their wet gear.
What I found that was best is we brought a small cage, like a raccoon cage and have it tied down in the front. It dries very well exposed to the wind like that and you never have to worry about your stuff falling off in the night time!

mgm7000,
You have to tell me, how the lobster diving was out at Catilina? I would think that with its "easy" access, there wouldn't be to many legals to get, but from your reports, that looks wrong? Was it esy lobster picking, or are you just a lobster expert?
Now I really do have to get out to Catilina ASAP!

Well if you call SCUBA at night easy, then sure, bug catching is easy!
As you all know In the day time the bugs like to crawl into small cracks and holes to hide, but at night they come out of their holes and roam the sea bottom.
Depending on where you are, and what time of year it is (Preserves are crawling with bugs, but don't touch as they are over $500 fine a pop!) the sea floor may be crawling with them, or you will just see them every once and a while crawling around.
Point your light at them and usually they freeze.
WARNING! Be sure to wear GLOVES when catching Lobster! The west coasters may not have claws, but their tails are MIGHTY sharp!
As that weekend was the mark of the open of lobster season, naturally there are quite a few lobsters out there...
And from what I was seeing I'd say only ehh, maybe 1 out of 5 or 6 bugs were 'Too small'
Between the 5 of us we gorged our selves with 8-12 lobster tails a night. Pure heaven!
