Venezia canals for the new New Orleans

Post by Robert »

Don't fix the levies, leave them down. Take advantage of the water instead.

Hey, I had an idea: Rebuild New Orleans with canals like Venice Italy. Carefully route water from the river through to keep it fresh and reasonably clean for a body of water under a big city. Put the best savable buildings on dock like structures and leave plenty of uncovered canals instead of roads through it all. Then some Mac26X folks can drive all the way home on their Mac26X!

Yeah, but where would all the young girls dance and show off their naughty-bits in order to get strings of cheap plastic beads? And where would they film all those great, must-see movies, like the 'Girls Gone Wild' series? There won't be any streets!

I don't know how well that's gonna fly, guys....

A couple of things I have learned from this storm is to have a few days of food and water with you at the emergercy center and a have few bucks on you as the banks are all closed due to no power.
Captain Steve is now an emergency response person, perhaps he can add to this list.
I hate to say it but a gun might be a handy little thing to have after seeing all the looting. They were shooting at the police.

I confess I am a commie pinko plus gun lover - a bizarre combination I have found, in some circles.

Anyway, Add to the above requirement

"And some training to use it correctly"

Not a tool you want to figure out under stress.

commie pinko +?

Post by bamabob »

Does that mean you are a left wing liberal who likes guns, or a makarov (commie pinko gun) owner. I think a Mac sailor should be a mak owner too.

Probably both of the above (he deftly avoids answering)

Seriously, buying/owning a gun for house or boat is a serious personal issue

I dont want to turn this thread into a debate on that issue. BTDT.

I was trying to point out that choosing to own a gun should also mean you should choose to master its maintenance and use. This is a bit like sailing, reading about it is one thing, using it is another.

Thanks BK, you cant have too much water and duct tape during a disaster. As a retired cop I have guns and they are what you call a "show stopper" if someone wants what you have during a disaster. show them a gun...look like you will use it,or better yet...look unstable enough to use it and they will go and take stuff from someone else.

No body gets shot and someone else gives up their stuff, because they didnt want to protect it.

See www.ready.gov for the best advice on diaster preparations. the book "Are you Ready" is great and its free, from your government.

The above is not necessarily the views of my employer!

I'm with you.. I'd keep my guns loaded and very handy.

It all goes back to the old story about the bear...
Two guys are out camping and they awaken to the sound of a bear very near their campsite. The first guy gets near the tent's door and is about to start running when he looks back to see the other guy putting on his sneakers. He says, "What are you doing?" The first guy says, "I don't have to out-run the bear. . . I only have to out-run you, pal."
In a target-rich environment like a disaster, you only have to be less 'inviting' than the next target. The others are easier than you, so you get bypassed.

I was in Alaska a couple of weeks ago and saw a 50 cal. huge handgun in a sports store. The guy said the 50 can stop a bear with no problems.
As I am planning a trip up the Inside Passage I am thinking about getting a bear stopper gun. Either that or stay in marinas in town and do no hiking. (Do bears swim out to anchored boats?)

BK you are my hero if you humped a '50...

hull, I hated being an AG on a M60 crew...

While in the guard, I TC'd on a M113 and got to fire the Ma Duece, which was a hull of a thrill. But, I can't imagine carrying it any farther than from the track to the armory...

I was at a ranger talk last weekend - Stockton Island, Lake Superior. The ranger said that the black bears swim from island to island on occasion. I asked him if they were a danger to navagation. He replied that bears get a direction in mind and keep going in a straight line. Nothing will avert them from this course. If your boat is in the way the bear will try to climb over it. :o

Oh great. I'll bet we get in a debate about the righting moment of a ballasted Mac with a black bear climbing over it. And if the Mac had a weighted keel, would that prevent bear heel. What is the correct degree of heel with a black bear on the port side in a 10 mph wind? :D
