New Mainsail for M. Where did You Get Yours

Post by NiceAft »

I’m in the market for a new mainsail. Has any :macm: owner purchased one from BWY?

I hear ya. My Main is used up and stretched out.

I like supporting BWY. With that said, I bought my 150 genny from Judy B sails. She's no longer selling sails.

Others on this forum have used thesailwarehouse.com.

Let us know what you end up doing as I may be following you soon. Maybe Santa will bring a new Mainsail.

Used Precision sails.
I was moving my boom higher on the mast to gain headroom, so was needing a custom size.
I also added a track to the mast, so I have real sliders instead of slugs in a slot designed for a bolt rope.
This allowed me to purchase a fully battened mainsail.
They treat all sails (including the foresail) as custom, so had me make measurements of the boat for the foresail as well as the main.

Bought our new main at BWY, hopefully will have some photographic evidence of a Lite-skin main sail installed on a 26X in a couple weeks.

What was your reasoning for the Lite-Skin over the 5oz Dacron?

Besides it looks cool you mean?

Our boat came with a disintegrating Doyle jib on the furler and a torn Doyle mainsail, I suspect both were the 28 year old original 3.9oz equipment.

We ordered a replacement coastal/cruising 150% genoa from BWY first, which turned out to be a Rolly Tasker. I really liked it after hoisting it for the first time and decided to look at a Rolly Tasker main sail. The matching coastal/cruising 5oz main on BWY is a Doyle in the photo, while their upgrade sail is a Rolly Tasker 5oz Lite-Skin, which they equate to a 6oz Dacron.
Shopping the Rolly Tasker site, they rate their Lite-Skin sails above their offshore crosscut sails performance wise, with lower durability. The BWY price on the Lite-Skin main they stock is $470 more than the Doyle 5oz Dacron, which I found reasonable compared to upgrade prices ordering elsewhere.

We'll be able to compare how the standard RT Dacron genoa wears compared to their Lite-Skin main, but performance-wise I'll have to go on BWY's advice, as comparing it to my 28 year old thrashed main isn't exactly going to tell me a lot!

Understood. Also, the grey is distinctive. :)

I bought a Rolly Tasker Flat Top, loose-footed main and 100% Jib through BWY 3 years ago and love it.
I thought about going with a larger jenny, but was told by Cheryl that the set-up I bought would work out best.
I have 2 reef points in the main.

It just so happens that I was also in the need of a new main. My old sail was a flat top, and after owning a flat top, I realized that my sailing doesn’t warrant the performance of another flat top, so I went for a traditional sail. I wanted a Dacron heavier than 5%. I decided for a sail from Ullman Sail in Annapolis. https://annapolis.ullmansails.com/team/steve-ross/

It will be ready when we go to the Annapolis Sail Boat Show in October. The sail will have two reef points, be loose footed, and be full battened. The manager of the sail loft thinks 5.5 % is a better weigh for the :macm: . 6% is too much.

Oooh, I like that. But does it come in white or is the black because of the material?
And how thick/strong is it?

Just the 'Anthracite Gray' the outer layer of the laminate is composed of:

https://www.rollytasker.com/en/our-sail ... kin-sails/

It's supposed to hold shape better than an equal thickness Dacron, so performs like a 6.0 Dacron while handling like a 5.0. It won't wear as evenly as Dacron though due to being a laminate, once that gray protective layer wears through somewhere, the film layer is as delicate as a racing laminate.
