I got fed up with all my MRS gear rattling around. I bought an 8" sonotube 7 feet long and threw my mast crutch, mast crutch extension, MRS pole and baby stays in it.

I had no idea what a sonotube is. Neither did spell correct. It kept correcting to “snooty it”. Anyway, now I know. It appears to be an ingenious solution. How did you (if you did) seal the ends :?:

Looks uneven but it isnt in person. If i get tired of the backsplash ill remove it. Mostly decorative.

My seasonal launch delayed so picking at a few minor 'nice to have' projects...

Bottom Job 2023-- Rustoleum Black bottom paint with copper. Bought 1 quart for 1 coat. Scraped algae type growth off with scrub brush on my cordless drill. Applied onto leftover barrier coat.

First test sail in consistent steady wind, in 10 to 15mph winds. Subjectively it felt like it accelerated faster and I was easily and consistently above 5.5 and near 6 for prolonged periods. I suspect 0.5 to 0.75 knot increase in speed
Yesterday at dock.

Had a weeklong trip on Erie. Here is our map log. This is the 3rd year of the trip. The western end Lake Erie islands are excellent cruising ground. Each island has its own character, good food at restaurants all over and good marinas too. Unfortunately we ran into some weather this year limiting our sailing days to 4. Its definitely family friendly. Can catch abundant walleye and perch if interested. The islands are all close enough that you can zip between them even if you have a narrow weather window. We put in at Huron, OH which has a nice safe public launch w ample free parking for the week. Ill post more pictures.

Hi Nice Aft!

A “Sono Tube” is a trade name for a concrete form tube is a thick wall hard paper tube used for casting concrete columns and footings.
Can be found in hardware stores like Lowe’s, Home Depot, Menards, or even some of the more complete ACE locations.
Various companies manufacture these form tubes like Quickcrete.

Had slow drainage from my motor well since I purchased the boat. Unsure If drain was original? I found a bunch of wadded up thin film plastic jammed into the angle fittings.

I Replaced all piping/tubing
Supplies
Two 1-inch PVC 90deg barbed fittings.

Clear PVC Tubing inner diam 1-inch:
13in clear PVC tubing
Two 3-inch segments of 1in (interior) PVC tubing.

Screw Hose Clamps.

Thanks for this, it is also on my high priority list.

Can I ask if you used any type of sealant at either of the fiberglass nipples? IMO this is a weak point of the boat and I've considered glassing in the hole entirely and adding a real thru-hull, but I hate cutting holes in the hull.

My drain hole is almost continuously underwater during any cruise, and I'm so worried about it I carry bungs and plug the drain from the outside when there are people on the boat.

I'm considering using 1" sanitary hose for this job, with two stainless steel elbows and 3M 4200 sealant on the nipples. If I can heat-treat and bend the hose so that there are no elbows, I think that's even preferable.

I hate the way this pipe holds standing water in the winter: I put anti-freeze in it before I tarp the boat but I'm still worried about a freeze-crack eventually.

Ditto StarScream!

It’s on our “To-Do-List” too!
I don’t like the vinyl tubing or the ‘u-trap’ arrangement either.
Not the finest bit of nautical boat planning…..

While I’ve looked at it several times I really haven’t come up with a plan I actually like dealing with the existing fixed geometry of the through hull and the motor well drain ports.

Just for discussion’s sake:
A part of me wants to fiberglass the existing port all up ans start fresh with a straight through from under the engine mount into the motor well aft wall as a single piece HD G10 fiberglass tube. Mount a screen guard in the motor well side and a flapper valve on the stern face to keep and back flow minimized.

I haven’t checked to see if there is any flexibility or relative movement between the motor well and the stern engine mount region.
That would require getting down in the @ft berth while the boat is bouncing along in somewhat adverse conditions to check adequately.
If there is relative movement between the two locations and I try to make a rigid interface tube then it will eventually break :| which would be a bad thing to discover….

If I were to go a flexible route retaining the existing ports I’d go with a spiral reinforced bilge hose over the septic hose.
I’ve seen that white hose get sticky over time and swell… neither inspire my confidence…. Whereas the bilge hose material hasn’t changed over time. I’d most likely gently thermal form the bilge hose to fit better and avoid any water entrapment loops. I’d want to use Stainless hose band clamps with integral tightening keys to make it easy to tighten/check periodically. Some 3M 4200 sealant wouldn’t be a bad idea either as you mentioned….

The BUNGS!!!
That what I forgot to order! Thank you for the reminder!
I knew there was something I’d forgotten to write down!
Thank you for the reminder!
It is appreciated!

@starscream: I didnt get a picture but the glassed in area seemed to have a CPVC type 1inch OD pipe in place for about 3 inches glassed to the hull. I just wiped it off snd reapplied the clesr pvc pipe w a clamp. I dont know what the original was like-assuming mine was modded by PO.

Overeasy: I had many ideas of overengineering this and redoing the entire drain....i said the last one worked for 15+ years I better not try to be smart and 'fix' something simple. I could easily open it up in 5 minutes and swap any part now and or clean/inspect which will suit me fine. My drain is above waterline even w my heaviest load. I do have some black rubber stoppers to smack in to any over my 3 above waterline drain holes if needed.
