Mac 19

Post by ugly »

Hello All,
I am new to this forum. Just bought a Mc 19 that has been sitting in a back yard for 20 years or more. It was used only 4 or 5 times. it is in mint condition and it seems all there. However no owners manual. I could use any info or help I can get. I have done quite a bit of sailing. I now live in AZ so I do not plan to put this in the water for a number of months. My long term plan is Puget sound, perhaps Sacramento river, then lower west coast of FL to the keys, then the Bahamas. I am retired so I have the time. I chose this boat because I can tow it with my small hybrid car. I know it is not meant for blue water but, but I have been there and I know what to expect. I am interested in what others have done with this boat, and any suggestions.
Thank You

Hello again,
My 19 seems to be a fractional rig with no spreaders or back stay. I would welcome any comments or opinions.
Thank You

If you have a stock Mac 19 then you should have both spreaders and a backstay.

The first year the 19 was made 1992 it did not have spreaders, backstay and had a fractional rig. FYI the first 10 models were red!

I now have the papers it is a 1992, but it is white. Apparently the hull speed for this boat is a little over 5K will a 6hp reach that with an average load in the boat???

Yes, I have a 6hp as a kicker for fishing and it will go 5-6 mph wide open, pretty loud though.

If you are seriously contemplating a future trip to the Bahama’s, I would think 5HP is not adequate for the 70 miles over open ocean. And if it is just adequate, I would want something more than just adequate. Most especially when crossing the Gulf stream. When the warmth of the Gulf Stream comes in contact with the colder Atlantic off the coast of Florida, it gets rough.

Thank you for your reply, I look forward to many more. I am thinking about naming the boat "Hull Speed". I would rather not pay for, and carry, more HP than that, especially for one use. I am sure that it will sail faster than hull speed and that will be good enough for me. I am no longer in a hurry to do anything, I am 84 years old and god has blessed me with a body that still does most of what I ask of it. I want to spend my final years doing what I once truly enjoyed. I am from Fl, while I have never sailed across the gulf stream, I know many who have. Like so many things, do not be controlled by the clock, pick your time and weather, and wind direction, and it is a piece of cake. I have done quite a bit of sailing, Olympia WA to Ziewatt, Mexico, and others. I do not consider myself to be an accomplished sailor, mostly broad reach, and the diesel took care of the rest, now I look at things differently. This boat is an inexpensive new toy, light weight, easy to tow, and sufficient room for me. Meanwhile it gives me something to do,planning, rigging, and most important meeting new people with similar interests. I am interested about any knowledge or opinions others may have about this boat, hope to hear from many.
Thank You,
Ugly

Ugly,

I can relate with what you posted, except you are 11 years ahead of me. With your added years, you probably gained much wisdom. I don’t know what size boat you were on when you did the big trip to Mexico, I have to believe it was bigger than 19’, and that diesel was more powerful than 5HP. I’m just saying. At 74, I’m just a young whippersnapper. :D

I would want a 9.9hp motor as a minimum if I intended to run the motor for any extended duration. As noted above, a 6 at WOT is going to be a screamer.

I have a 70hp motor on my boat but RARELY run it WOT because it's too dang loud.

Wisdom,,,I like to believe so, cuts and bruises for sure. A Dufour 27, with a 7hp diesel, a bit larger but considerably different. The fuel consumption charts show the 6 horse at 5000 rpm .5 gph, the 9.9 at 5000 rpm 1 gal. per hour. I was hoping that the 6 might reach hull speed at around 3000 rpm. I don't know much about planing hulls.

second set of spreaders & 4 head sails , also notice I added the mac26M pedestal & wheel steering

Its a great little boat lots of space for a 19 ft boat
