Securing Paddle Board

Post by Jchrisman »

Just wondering if anyone has a clean way to secure a paddle board along the port or starboard rail when sailing or motoring? Our use is on a lake, no oceans. Any pictures?

Hmmm, I like the thought of it, that's for sure. I might try to hang it off clips off the lifeline like these https://www.amazon.com/FIXCLIP-Storm-Pr ... line+clips and some slings like these https://www.amazon.com/Block-Surf-Surfb ... oard+sling.

Yes there's a few ways, depending on how handy you are.

1. A 3 step boarding ladder, clipped & tied onto the rail, either side, upside down use the turn the gunnel hooks out to cradle hold your board. I use this in conjunction with a 5 step ladder hooked onto same side to get on & off paddle board & into Mac.

2. I "J" bent a peice of aluminum bimini pole 7/8ths or 1", drilled a hole large enough to put a SS band through. Covered it with a pool noodle & clamped it to 1" stanchion. I had 2. One broke so placed the front of paddleboard btw the chain plates. Cover with old hose or pool noodle cushion. Hang rear of paddle board off J hook. Drill at far end of J to connect elastic & hook to keep board secure while motoring/ sailing.

I tied a 10' line to paddleboard handle to lift board out of water once I was on boat. It's a bit of a chore so be careful & don't fall.

Those look pretty slick! Price is a bit steep but they look like they're the best design going.

I use 2 standard flat webbing straps tied with a water knot. Each one becomes a big loop ~4' in diameter. I secure them with a larks foot to a stanchion pole and simply slide the board in. It ends up looking like Gazmn's Ollie Gray.

We pretty much always had a combo of 2 kayaks, sups, or windsurfers on the roof all season for about 5 years depending on where the boat was kept. I was not a fan of hanging them off the side on the :macx: as they felt too large and exposed there when sailing. Also when docking with pilings. The roof does put them in the way as you go forward and cover the inner jib tracks. I got used to this and just stepped over them. (if you are agile enough to SUP 8) ) My windsurfer and SUP are both around 10'6" and 32 wide and fit OK, but larger would be awkward. Similar I found the 8' kayaks are cheap, easy to load, and nestle perfect on the roof like they are made for it, this is what we used for longer trips. I generally loaded one or both on and off at least twice a day to take the dog to shore on trips, so ease of loading was important.

Garhauer also makes kayak/sup racks which clamp on to stantions and I believe swivel out of the way when not in use. They are les expensive than the magma.

Thanks for all the tips. It lead me to this... spendy at $200 but it's a clean look and I like how it attaches to the stanchion. If down the road, I buy another board, they have an adapter so that it fits two. In the meantime I have simply laid it between the port shrouds and lifelines with a rag providing padding between the stay adjusters. This kept it off the deck but the SUPRAX will look much better (I hope).

After trying a few ideas, this turns out to be super-easy.

Requires a few Paddleboard D-rings from Amazon, and a small can of HH-66. Glue a line of D-rings along one edge of the paddleboard, and then just pass a line from a midships stanchion through the D-rings to the aft posts.

At full throttle the board gets a lot of spray, but no problem for the HH-66, it seems. Haven't tried it in heavy weather/waves yet.

The paddleboard is a great add. It's my first board, and I'm impressed at how low-drag it is. Son#3 was able to stand up at 20mph on his first paddleboard-ski attempt. Here, he's just learning the ropes, so to speak. It's hard for a dad to watch his kid disappear into 75 ft of brown water as the boat speeds away, even with the lifejacket on (rocking the Stars and Stripes from Canada).

Very cool :!:

I had to check and see what you have powering that :macx: My 50HP 4 stroke would not do it.

Thanks.

Here's video evidence :D . The board we bought from costco included a kayak seat, which he used before trying to stand up. He said that at 20MPH the force in the rope was easily manageable. After he stood up and fell for the first time, he also learned that it's a good thing to let the tow rope go before your face hits the water. Life lessons in a 1st world country.

The paddleboard really is a great add. In the video you can see the port rudder at "half mast", which is just right for being out of the water but also not interfering with the tow rope.

Pretty cool. I know about towing tubes and waterskiing, but not Paddle Boards. 8)

Very Kewl Starscream!

I like your rear quarter attachment. While I’ll tie down the ends, I wrap [slip knot] a 3/8” dock line around the middle of my board and use a clove hitch to attach it to the safety lines. I use 2 11’x 30” or 14’x28” paddle boards strapped to each side.

Towing a paddleboard can't be much different that what we used to do in high school. Even a small boat and engine could pull a surfboard with someone standing on it.
