Spreader end. Thread sealer

Post by Mike25 »

Venture 25 1975
Recently broke a spreader end cap and ordered new ones that are metal. They are two pieces. The end pinches the stay/shroud as it's tightened into the cap that fits into 7/8 tube with two 6 by 32 machine bolts. Should I use some type of thread sealer or locktite on these threads? Seems like they could loosen with vibration. I do want to be able to remove them if needed. Any recommendations appreciated

Would something like this help?

If you place a piece of Gorilla duct tap over the end cap (to not loose loosened screw) and placed this over the whole kit and caboodle?

Wow didn't think about those but I like to inspect hardware and am struggling with essential equipment being concealed. I guess there is the added benefit of protecting my jib from the sharp edges (the new screw end beyond the tightened nut). I will add these to my install and look for some blue thread locker. It's supposed to be removable.

My recent post was "keel position, winch view obscured" lamenting the hidden well where the keel winch is housed. I guess I'm gun shy on that one cause the po broke a big hole in the top of the keel trunk by over winching the keel up. Others have said it takes mucho cranking but the swaging ferrule broke right through. I digress

Thanks for the observation

I have similar spreader caps and frankly had not consider the possibilities the OP suggests.

One approach would be to use rigging tape (white vinyl) over the fitting, the cover with a spreader boot secured with UV-resistant zip ties.
The key to inner peace is to admit you have a problem and leave it at that.
