Tohatsu prop size

Post by Ken Orthner »

After sailing my 26X for almost 2 years - I finally had the opportunity/reason to run the boat for a long distance under power without interference. At WOT - it was showing 7000 RPM (a tad high perhaps?) the top speed was only 11 kn (GPS) - light tail wind - boat only lightly loaded - mast up - no ballast. Any of you "Tohatsu/Nissan motor owners that have played with the props - any idea what I should be running? I'm not sure what size prop is on it now - will definatly be taking a closer look this weekend

:? thanks

I thought the red-line on a Tohatsu 50 was 5500 rpm? I get about 17 mph at 5500 on my M50D... boat lightly loaded, 4 souls on board. My prop is 11" diameter, 10 pitch - I think it's a BWY custom prop - it has no markings on it.

Hello:
My 95 Tohatsu M50D came with a 12" X 12.5 prop which I modified for smoothness and cavitation (speudo cupping). I bought the BWY prop as a spare it is a 12 x 11.5?

Boat is loaded for cruising, empty ballast and no bottom paint.
WOT w/ 12.5 = 5100 rpm @ 17 mph
WOT w 11.5 = 5400 rpm @ 17 mph

Tohatsu Prop

Post by Bill Millar »

My new Tohatsu 50LDI was delivered with an 11.1 x 13 prop. I couldn't get above 4500 rpm with this on my 26X, so changed to 11.6 x 11 and this gives 5,000+ rpm.

Have a look at this website

which might help.

Our :macm: was delivered with 12.1 x 9 prop on its Nissan 50 TLDI (a Tohatsu of another color). We've just finished the break-in period, and at WOT are running ~ 5200 rpm - which yields 18-19 mph with an empty ballast tank.
