Giant battery to run air conditioner, freezer, fridge, microwave - Youtube

Post by OverEasy »

Hi All!
Came across a nice video on YouTube
Titled:
Giant battery to run air conditioner, freezer, fridge, microwave
Made by:
Nine hundred dollar luxury yacht
Published on:
Dec 16, 2021

Link:

The guy is a nice laid back guy who placed 16 batteries into his Mac26X in the aft dinette bench seat storage area.
He’s actually done a nice job of it all too!

It’s a pretty ambitious project that’s worth taking a look at.

Best Regards

16 batteries!!!!!

Interesting installation. All that power is scary.

The boat must have quite the list to starboard.

I just sort of hopped through that vid and didn't see/hear it, but how many amp-hours is that bank good for?

:o
WOW! That is something else altogether. Larger than some sailboats with electric engines I have seen.

Watched a few of his other videos as well. Quite a character (as are we all).

One of the videos indicates that these are LITHIUM cells, so that is a tremendous amount of power (and maybe not quite so heavy).

Those are 35 amp hour Lithium Batteries. 16 in total
16 batteries X 35 amp hours = 560 AH. Or 12 volts X 560 AH is 6.720 Kilowatts. Thats a lot of watts :o
He stated in series but they're in parallel. There's 5 batteries directly hooked to a aluminum buss bar and 3 batteries with wires.

Lithium must have all wires exact same length to each battery.

So he made two 3.360 Kilowatt (280AH) batteries hooked in parallel. One on top of the other.

There should be fuses or circuit breakers I didn't see any maybe in the next video.
I would not go down this route on my boat too many connections if one gets loose or has resistance you got a problem unless you're able to monitor each battery with a bluetooth app on a phone/tablet.

Hi Jimmy Alonso!

Yes! A LOT OF POWER IN THAT THAT DINETTE BENCH!!! :o :o :? :? :| :|

Yes! You make an excellent point! He could definitely use several terminal fuses/breakers for all those batteries
🔋🔋🔋🔋🔋🔋🔋🔋
🔋🔋🔋🔋🔋🔋🔋🔋
as well as balancing out the power leads!

He appears he is a nice enough fellow that kindly appreciative and constructive advice from a knowledgeable person would be well taken.

The relevant marine electrical safety guidelines limit the distance from battery terminal that a battery circuit protective device can be from the source. I don’t personally know of a robust enough DC fuse or DC Circuit Breaker that could handle the dead short current involved.

Nor am I familiar enough with Lithium chemistry battery charge/discharge/internal short/failure characteristics. Someone like yourself, Inquisitor and others among the forum are much more knowledgeable.

I don’t know what chemistry batteries he is using but do strongly suspect that this much potential current can do considerable damage and would probably be able to ignite even LiFePh batteries.

Personally I have welded with just a single truck battery when I’ve had to. I have no idea what kind of a welding rod could handle that much power but I suspect that 1/2 inch diameter rod might not be big enough! :o :? :| :D

Another set of aspects that gives me concern it the ability to switch the bank On/Off and how does one address charge balancing?

At these potential power levels I’d personally be actively seeking out degreed experienced Electrical Engineers and/or from the vendor(s) before installation.

The open un insulated bus bars are inviting a crowbar short!

Best Regards

You mean I shouldn't store my anchor chain on top of my batteries? :?

If you did could we just call you “Sparky” eh?
:) :)

Just wondering after watching a fancy electric race car burn on Top Gear or Grand Tour for several days….. how long would all those batteries take to stop 🔥? :? :? 😳😳

What would one use as a fire suppression?🤔🤔
Somehow I think my two 5 lb ABC extinguishers 🧯🧯 wouldn’t make dent in it and probably just make it made

Anyone have suggestions? :| :|
