Sailing Couple Wannabe's Sink in Gulf of Mexico
Hit something they didn't see that stopped the boat. Not a lot of info, but certainly a cautionary tale.

Re: Sailing Couple Wannabe's Sink in Gulf of Mexico
I'd be curious to know what they hit. A sand bar isn't going to rip the keel off, so it must have been something hard and immovable to stop the boat near-instantly, unless it was something that holed the hull rather than ripping off the keel or possibly the rudder.

That was about 3 years ago. Here's a followup: https://www.tampabay.com/pinellas/what- ... -20190218/
Executive Summary: They cranked up a Gofundme site, raked in FAR more than the boat cost, was given another bigger boat for $1 by some well-meaning retired doctor, wallowed around in the Gulf on that a bit, during which the dude nearly tore off his thumb while anchoring, sold the boat, bought a van to live in, which broke down, made it back to Colorado, where they plan to explore abandoned mines. So, given the way their "adventure luck" seems to trend, I fully expect some sort of "Baby Jessica--Couple trapped in collapsed mine" saga will be forthcoming.
Adventurous Spirits or Clueless Millenials? You decide.

A lot of sketchy info on this story. No insurance. They setup a gofundme page. A doctor GAVE them a new boat. Makes you wonder.

It's a mix - they need to do some growing up. A lot of couples think they can be millionaire's on youtube instead of working for a living.

Classic clickbait scam. We can stop by these by leaving the bait to decay and rot

Maybe….
But there are a lot of youngsters on their own for the first time trying to experience what life adventures there are to be had in a semi/sorta constructive way.
They are often uncertain of a traditional “work” path as they have seen it not quite work out as planned in their parents or own lives. A chance taken to see if there something more adventuresome “out there”. The Great Depression of 2007/2008 wiped out the life and retirement savings of a lot of people.
The changing of companies heater-smelter
and corporations abandonment of pensions all contribute to a feeling among the twenty/thirty somethings that there has to be “something” more to life, at least experientially⛷

🏖🏝🏕🛖 before they find themselves locked into a life driven by obligations (good and bad).
The YouTube, FaceBook,, Blogs, Twitter, TicTok, etc.. are the means by which social media has profoundly changed communications for them. Kind of unfortunate I some cases where bad faith actors put out false and misleading narratives, information and expectations. The algorithms “tailoring” information to monetize social content into corporate commercial revenue streams also fractionalizes to extremes rather than moderates to middle ground expectations.
A lot of younger adults are more willing to share their lives and are also willing to help able others to pursue alternatives that they find interesting but for one reason or another aren’t able do themselves. It’s a very different kind of world than the traditional work/career one I came of age in…..

WADR, your command of historical reality might stand some improvement. The "Great Depression" was in the 1920's, etc.

Sorry, meant that little bit of a disastrous economics that started the summer of 2007 that wiped out people’s jobs and started a foreclosure tidal wave.
Actually the spell checker on my laptop decided that it needed to auto-correct “Great Recession” to “Great Depression”
Don’t you just love technology….
Thanks for catching that!
