Unnamed 26X
Under a helpful reply in the repair forum, I noticed that member Svscott has a 26X "to be named."
May I start the suggestions with:
ATARAXIA
Other suggestions???

Re: Unnamed 26X
Thanks for noticing that, Opie. I'm not going to lie, I had to look up ATARAXIA and I quite like the suggestion.
According to Alexa: Ataraxia is state of freedom from emotional disturbance and anxiety; Tranquil. I think my wife and I both have better than average vocabulary and neither of us knew that one.
I welcome other's input and am happy to consider any further ideas.
My dad and uncle named the 26D THREE HOUR TOUR and I love that name both for the nod to Gilligan's Island and 3 hours is pretty much the shortest sail trip I like to take on the boat.
Since it's showed up, we've taken to calling the 26X BOAT TWO. The Admiral thinks maybe that should be the name. I am sorta meh about it.
One of the first names that struck a chord right after bringing it home was NEVER ENOUGH... it's the answer to so many things... How many boats (or motorcycles!) do you need? Or How much time and money should be spent on the boat? My wife and our 9 year old son like Never Enough for the reasons I just listed, plus they're into theater and musicals and they like the slight nod to the song from the movie The Greatest Showman.
I have done glass work for a living since 1998 and over the years have dabbled in various glass art creations so I've considered something generic like REFLECTIONS or some variant based on that.
I've discovered this X used to be called SUNSET (there is a shadow in the gelcoat that I found when first cleaning and waxing) and then the name was Kelani, as indicated by a couple of pics in the for sale ad when I bought it. All lettering was removed before I bought it, so I think I'm absolved from needing an official renaming ceremony?

Re: Unnamed 26X
The only advice I have on the name is that it's useful to have something that is easy to say and receive over the radio, and also easy to remember. Two syllables work well on the radio.
Our Bear Hunt seems to do the trick. Never had to repeat myself on the radio, and most lock operators remember that we're in the queue after one simple call. Once I announce intentions I never seem to get lost in the confusions of all the "Wet Pleasures" and "5 o'clock Somewheres". Yawn.
Same applies for the lettering: easy to read from a distance can be very convenient.

Re: Unnamed 26X
Read a funny boat naming story in the free Puget Sound area sailing magazine 48 Degrees North a few years back. This couple bought a used sailboat which they decided to rename. Only problem was figuring out what name to give their new boat. They wanted a unique name that no one else had.
He'd suggest a name - she didn't like it. She'd come up with one - he couldn't stand it. This went on for some time and they started to get desperate. Finally, in upper exasperation, he said "I know, let's call her Dog Breath!" His wife said "I love it!" and no matter what he said, he couldn't talk her out of it. So the boat became "Dog Breath". I've been keeping my eye out for her ever since.
Regarding our boat's name, Chinook, I see the name on other boats in local waters from time to time. Not the most common name, but but we're definitely not the only one. However, when we've sailed on the East Coast I definitely don't expect to see a West Coast salmon's name on an East Coast boat. Alas, I've seen 2 or 3, even back there.

I named our boat for my wife, NICE AFT. I’m sure you could find some other attribute to honor yours.

Re: Unnamed 26X
When I became the 2nd owner of Over Easy, the absence of a naming story from the original owner allowed me to ponder a meaning to the name. Something egg related was always assumed by others but I preferred to think it would be the name of a boat drink. In my 14 years with the boat, I never decided what that drink would be. But the process of elimination was fun...

Re: Unnamed 26X
Hmmm. Perhaps we should go with SPLIT PERSONALITY
I totally say that in jest. My wife is pretty even tempered and predictable (although she is a Leo, as am I so it's not always smooth sailing)... but I do like the name, especially in reference to the hybrid motorsailer that is the X. There are a lot of syllables and letters in that though. I'm not sure how much that'll matter to me because in 15 years, I've never had to announce my boat's name on the vhf. In fact, when I request a radio check, I use Sea Dragon as the handle instead of the actual name.
I don't know that I'm brave enough to go through with Split Personality though. If I ever told her the origin, I may end up sailing solo for awhile.

Re: Unnamed 26X
After choosing the name for our boat, I wanted to include an image of a chinook salmon, in Northwest Indian art motif, along with the name letters to go on the boat. Lacking the necessary artistic expertise to create my own image, I searched the internet, but couldn't find what I was looking for. Then one day, while out driving, I noticed a lumberyard named Chinook Lumber, and their logo was perfect. I pulled over and snagged a digital picture of their sign. At home, I modified it a bit and then took the image to Prism Graphics in Seattle, where they produced the naming letters and the chinook image in decal form. While loading my graphics onto their computer, I told my story to the Prism guy. He said "If it weren't for plagiarism, we'd be out of business." I still chuckle appreciatively when I drive past a Chinook Lumber yard.

Re: Unnamed 26X
My family and I have been struggling with remaining our boat for 5 years. The current name, "Summer Wages", doesn't really grab us. We've considered lots of names and even decided a few times, but we've never been happy enough to order new lettering.
We were at the Gorge Amphitheater (everyone should go here!) watching a Mumford and Sons concert and "Portugal. The Man" was the opening band. I didn't really know much about them, but they said they are from Alaska and they like to honor natives from the area at the beginning of their concerts. A local came on and talked about the beautiful view of Nch'i-Wana in the background. My wife and I both looked at each other and said that's what we should name our boat.
Nch'i-Wana means "The Big River" and is what the natives call the Columbia River. The Columbia is our main sailing grounds. My wife studied anthropology and I took a local history class in college, so we both knew the name, but we hadn't considered it for a boat name.
I hadn't thought about the difficulty of the name for getting through locks and bridges, but I'm pretty sure it's the name that we're going to stick with. We just need to order decals. I'll put it on the list. From memory (I'm sure I missed something): finish the 12V cooler install, finish making new bilge covers, installing the new countertop, update the exhaust for our Wallace stove, install the new to me outboard, install new & seal the siding hatch guides, fix the VHF antenna wiring at the mast base, etc.
Can anyone recommend a source for decals? If I get them ordered, I'm more likely to get them installed.
Jeff

B.O.A.T.U.S. can make decals. With a little thought to placement, you should be able to accomplish some nice results. Can anyone recommend a source for decals?
