Help - I can't rig my furler!

Post by adrian.oliver »

After months (years?) lurking here, we finally took delivery of our 1997 26x 2w ago. Maiden voyage in Plymouth Sound was on a beautiful day and was great fun.
The PO had helpfully labelled nearly everything so I could work out what went where! However, we had to attach the genoa to the roller furler - all OK with the aid of Moe's downloaded furler instructions until tying off the halyard and tack lines. The instructions clearly show fittings on the furler drum to attach to. This is my furler drum:

Please, where do I attach them?????

Furler

For some reason........that doesn't look like a CDI furler. At least not the one I'm familiar with.

The link didn't work for me (wans't granting me acess or something...

In any case if it's not the CDI furler, then what is it. I don't think there are too many flexible furlers on the market and the one or two others I've seen are considerably more expensive...

In any case I have a shacke (or two) attached to the drum that I tie the lines to. Just makes sure it's realy tight. There aren't mant choices, especially since it has to attach to something that spins with the furler.

Guys,
This looks exactly like the furler on my 97'X. I don't see the shackle that goes on the pin at the top of the drum though. That's wear my sail attaches.

My furler drum looks like yours. This sketch is from memory, so it's probably not perfectly accurate (in fact, I'm almost positive the "shackle" goes on the other side (the side without the ring-ding), but I just put it on this side so it would be visible.

You hoist the sail, tie off the halyard to the shackle, then run a 1/8" "tack tension line" as shown. You might have to push the furling line out a bit to get the knot away from the hole so that you can pass the tack line through it. Note, by making several "wraps" around like that, you're effectively creating a pulley system, giving you a mechanical advantage to put some tension on the tack (however, from what I understand, you DO NOT want to make it super-tight... just snug).

Now, what I definitely DON'T remember... you see the one end of the tack line that is marked "half-hitches"? I'm pretty sure that's how that end terminates, and it's done last. However, I don't remember what happens to the other end of this line, which happens before you start making the "wraps". Maybe it attaches with a bowline to the tack of the sail as I semi-illustrated. Or, maybe it's a bowline through the same hole in the drum that the line repeatedly passes through.

Maybe I can find my printed copy of the manual... the PDF I have shows, as you have discovered, an arrangement that doesn't look like our furlers. But in the meantime, I hope this helps.

Mine is rigged just the opposite of Mike's. The shackle has the sail attached to it...

FANTASTIC - thank you!

Post by adrian.oliver »

Hi everybody,
Thank you all very much - but especially Mike and Esperanza 'cos you've solved it for me! I have now realised what goes where and can experiment with tack tension knots etc. From researching it would appear that these are early Mark 2 CDI furlers and the halyard and tack arrangement was changed in 1998 to the more familiar shackles on top of the drum.
I am pretty confident I can do it now but I will take your drawing out with me on our next trip - thanks for putting in that amount of effort, Mike. Forgive my newbie questions (they could last a month or two!) but I hope one day to be able to post replies like yours!

PS Still not sure how to get photos to materialise though!
