Yet Another Galley Mod

As promised, pics of the tilt out unit at first fitting...

Well, had a few final adjustments to make it work, but it's all mounted and works exactly like I wanted.







Even after mocking it up, I wound up with the trash can interfering with the tilt out by about 1/8". So, I had to break the glue joints on two of the locating strips and move the trash can back a tad. The other issue was just a matter of counter sinking the screws that mount the pivot rod plates to the cabinet frame. I have the door gaps tight, and the screw heads were interfering with the door edge. Not too bad (if you don't count the eight hours it took me to wrap my head around it and execute ).

I still have concerns about the weight. Have you launched your Mac yet with the mod installed? I’d be interested to read your observations on how level she floats.

You're watching me build it real time. I still have a bit to do before installing it.

BOAT tells me it's just going to slide off the trailer and roll over! We'll see. I am going to put the water tank on the opposite side to help balance it out, but I think it's no worse than two (maybe three) lead acid deep cycle batteries. I haven't weighed it yet. All of our scales went in the dumpster after our fire and we never replaced them. I'll have to figure out how to weigh it or go get a scale... A big Yeti full of ice and cold stores for a week probably weighs more than my galley.

I'm sure it won't heel more than 15 or 20 degrees!

No more pics today. After finishing the tilt out, I spent the rest of the day sanding and varnishing. Not much to look at yet.

Maybe your next mod will be installing dual ballast tanks and an electric sump pump to move the ballast in accordance to the heel?

Got the trash area varnished for easy cleanup. Varnished the tilt out storage piece. Finished up the two end panels and put them on. Got some red oak 3/4 x 2-1/2 to make fiddles for the work surface. Hoping to get one of my cabinet/furniture friends to pass it over their router table a few times for me. Cut some small oak strips to trim out the outside corners. They will go from the bottom up and tie into the fiddle.

I guess I'll have to use laminate on the top because Ray and BOAT tell me the galley is already too heavy... That slab of granite would sure look good, though.





If I ever need to sand a hole quickly, I put a piece of sandpaper in a split dowel and chuck it in my drill. In a pinch, you can clean up a master cylinder or wheel cylinder like this, but only if you're in a bind... let's just say I've been in a bind or two.

Lots of nit noids today. Made trim to go on front and rear corners, and around bottom. Put in my flush cut router bit and fit the top to the sides and front - making a royal mess. Sanded everything that was ready and started smearing varnish on it. My sander is telling me it wants to retire, so I expect to have to make a tool run before long. Only one of my two ancient routers would work today, also...





Roughed the fiddles in last night. Leaving 1-1/2" up to keep the Admiral's cell phone on the counter - until it falls in the sink, I guess.



Started varnishing the outside of the drawer boxes.

Well, made a tool run this morning to replace my RO sander. Spent most of the day sanding and varnishing; and watching it dry Got the second coat on the cabinet. Need at least one more coat on the cabinet and drawer fronts.

Spent some time this evening fine tuning the trash can door. Drawers got dry enough for me to install the soft-close hardware and the tilt out storage - hopefully for the last time. Slow going from here on.

More sanding and varnishing...

Now, for the elephant in the room. I guess BOAT just felt sorry for me and didn't mention it - since it's going to capsize from the weight anyway.



Yes, the void in the expensive plywood that I made this abysmal repair for after the saw exploded it. I kept hoping it was a nightmare, but there it was every morning.

Needed a handle and latch of some sort. So, I picked a piece of scrap oak out of the pile and tried to cut away the parts that didn't look like a latch.





With the shape right, I had to put some latch guts in so Tomfoolery could later tell me a better way to do it.








Then, fiddle with it a bit; realizing I've burned half a day because I wouldn't buy another $35 sheet of plywood.





But, all's well that ends well, right?
