Hey all, does anyone have any pics of their companionway air conditioner mods? I've searched the mods section but all the links I find are old dead photobucket links. If any of you do could you repost a pic or 2 here? Thanks in advance.

I just did a similar set up to what Jimmy posted. You can actually offset the AC quite a bit to one side or the other and still have enough of a space for your companion way hatch to have structure on each side after the hole is cut out. The key is when you go find an air conditioner to try and find the smallest window unit you can. I found the one at Walmart to be the skinniest. Then I fabricated a very small section of a 2 x 4 piece of wood with a little rubber on each side as padding to support the back part of the AC when it is in the companionway.

Here is what I did pretty straightforward. Used the factory hatch as a starter template then cardboard cutout to ensure the AC slot was accurately placed.

They could be installed inside the boat, say in the V-berth or in the back of the aft berth, and then just a 6" flex hose could be run out of the boat anywhere.

Yes, I had one given to me. I tried valiantly to make it work. The heat is discharged through the hose and mine was not insulated, so it heated up the cabin as the unit was trying to cool it. I put mine in the forward seat for the 26X table and vented the hose out the forward hatch. I tried to vent it with a foam partition cut to fit the narrow gap when the hatch was closed down to the size of the hose diameter. It maybe lowered the temperature a couple of degrees. For Florida, that just did not cut it. These standard room air conditioners featured in this thread would be my suggestion. I think they get the job done from what I have read on this forum. Plus, the unit was heavy and difficult to move about.

A little 5000 BTU a/c from walmart will work better than an 8000 unit with the hoses. We got a billy box for our X and we like it as you can stand on it as you enter the cabin. I looked for a picture but could not find one.
